It may also be a speaker for the sync feature.

Definitely not the speaker for Sync. I have no clue though what it actually is though.

its the interior temp sensor for the driver side ETAC. the sync speakers are ontop of the rear view mirror and on late 10's and all 11's a second speaker on the headliner inbetween the ceiling console and the sun visor.

the 2nd passenger side temp sensor for the ETAC is on the passenger seat rail.

Yes, those are the mics. The sync audio plays through the speakers.

speaker, mic - same thing. only difference is whether the information is flowing in or out.

wire a speaker into where a microphone should be and i guarantee you'll get sound. it might sound like crap but it will still record. all a microphone is a diaphragm picking up sound waves flowing through the air, and all a speaker is a diaphragm projecting sound waves to flow through the air

"Moving-coil microphones use the same dynamic principle as in a loudspeaker, only reversed. A small movable induction coil, positioned in the magnetic field of a permanent magnet, is attached to the diaphragm." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microphone

give it a break

If the truck has automatic temperature control, the vent is very likely the temperature sensor.
