What's up with the 2011 5.0L 6 Speed Trans issue?

I test drove a 2011 XLT Screw 4WD 5.0L 3.55 axle and it's transmission was no better than my 2008 Sport Trac V8 6 speed 6R60(same as 150 but 150 has larger torque converter speced as 6R80). My 2008 (before flashes) did the same thing. It felt like a manual in 1st gear. It would chug back and forth when you gave it pedal at very very low speeds. Just like a manual if you don't slip the clutch some.

Maybe they have a trans flash for this issue. I noticed it right off the bat when driving the truck through the parking lot. Like I said, it reminded me of the Sport Trac's 6R60 trans before I had the flash that fixed it.

My 6R60 and the 3 Valve 4.6L in the Sport Trac was AWESOME after the trans flashes. The thing was quick and powerful for a midsize truck. I never had the 2-1 harsh shift as that was only common in the 2006 Explorers and 2007 Explorers/Sport Tracs. The problem I had was that 2nd held in after you came to a stop. Only after you took off from a stop, did it shift to first. That bump was really annoying!! It was fixed after a flash.

After it was fixed, there was only one problem if you could say the such. When the trans was cold or not warmed up, it sometimes would stay in 2nd when it took off from a start. 2nd would hold for 1 second and give a hestitation feel, then switch to 1st, but smooth as butter without no bump, only could feel a jump in acceleration. Once the trans warmed up, it was just about perfect.

The 5.4L trans is the best out of my Sport Trac and the 2011 trans. It's shifts just as any trans and has none of the issues I felt in the 2011 5.0L combination. If the 2010 trans is not warmed up, it can have a harsh shift in the lower gears but it's not troublesome. Once it's warmed up and it warms up much quicker than the Sport Tracs trans, it's perfect.

Just because Ford did some changes to the 2011 6R80 doesn't mean it's going to be better, just that they feel that it is. Obviously it has a problem that needs to be corrected that was corrected on the 6R60 before it ever made it to the 2009 and 2010 6R80 trans.

None the less, the chugging wasn't that bothersome to me.

I love these transmissions better than any 5 speed or 4 speed trans I had in my others trucks. I get better mileage with bigger engines plus I get stump pulling gears!

My Sport Trac in the Winter got 17.5 mpg (18.5 mpg in the Summer) mixed driving to work with that 3 valve 4.6L and the 6R60. My previous 2005 Nissan Pathfinder 4.0L V6 5 Speed Trans got about 16.5 mpg (17.5 mpg in the Summer) in the winter and Nissan Titan 4WD Crew 5.6L got 11.2 mpg in the winter (13.2 mpg in the summer). The 5.4L Screw 4WD 5.5' bed 3.55 axle truck is getting 17 mpg now in the winter and it's not even broke in yet! I definitely can't complain!

I really like these transmissions. I didn't feel this enthusiastic until I got my 6R60 flashed and fixed (about 3 flashes total).

I'm taking my 2010 Screw in tomorrow. It seems like it slips, but I think it may be what was mentioned earlier - It sometimes stays in 2nd at stop, then as you pull out it immediately shifts down then up two. It normally only happens once in 20 times, But last week it did it 3 times in 15 minutes.

I'm not sweating it. I got extended for 6 yrs. I wonder though, if the split shaft extended wheel base is a factor. I have the vibration when stopping too.

I absolutely love my tranny in my 11 plat with 3.55 and the 5.0. I am amazed by how smooth all the shifts are. I love to hit the up button on the shifter to bring up the gears on my info screen and watch how smoothly it will do a 5-3 shift or any other combination.

Same here on my 2011 XLT 5.0 with 3.55LS, but there is only 700 miles on it. I hope it gets better as well!

Had it in for service but could not reproduce the issue. I now have 2500 miles on it.
I've only noticed one possible occurrence. Also; Seems like all of a sudden it's picked up 20% more power and go. Almost like there was break in programming.

I had to rescue my daughter from the highway after she blew a tire. I followed her back home with flashers and cruse set at 45. It registered 22.5 MPG for 30 miles - WOW !
