hi all,
i just changed my 2010 f150 4.6L motor, fo rthe first time.
ok, the owners manual says 4.6L = 6 Quarts. MINE
and the 5.4L = 7 Quarts.
I drain the Oil, Change the filter, and refill with 6 Quarts of Full Synthetic
oil. Start engine, check for leaks = None.
Shut off motor, and Check Oil DIPSTICK.
the dipstick reads 1/2 quart low, ( in the Middle of Crosshatch, in the middle of two holes.)
OK, so i had to ADD 1/2 quart of oil to get the oil to touch the full mark.
WHATS UP, that is a 6.5 Quart capacity including filter, NOT 6.0 quarts???
yes, my f150 was on Level ground.

No, basically you overfilled it. In the middle of the hash marks means do not add. Not at the top of the hash marks. States that in the OM. Anywhere in the hash marks, do not add.

Its because you used full synthetic Ford motor oil which has better viscosity ratings and better lubrication the the cheap stuff. Makes the oil bond close together thus the need for more oil.

Haven't really looked much under the hood as I only have 1,000 miles on my truck after 2 months.
BUT, I was looking for the oil filter today. Found it. HOW would be the best attempt of getting this off?
I have a 2010 Ford F-150 STX with the 4.6 2V engine.
There is basically NO WAY to get to this filter from the bottom of the truck.
it almost looks like you have to attempt it from under the hood with some long arms . . . .
Right under the oil filter it looks like some kind of drain tray (where it doesn't run all over the crossmember/suspension. Its sorta angled where it will flow into an oil drain pan.
However, this drain pan is keeping you from unscrewing the oil filter from the bottom of the truck.
So anyone else got this truck that's attempted to loosen the oil filter from the top?

Service with 6 qts. to include priming the oil filter, start and check for leaks, shut off and check oil level. Remember that the oil is now throughout the engine and drivetrain so the dipstick will read 1/2 to 1 qt. low. The oil works it's way back to the oil pan as it sets and cools off.
A tip for you; service to 6 gts. then pull dipstck and etch a line with a scribe at the full level which will be in the safe (hash mark) range. Now, you have a more accurate way of checking your oil level. I do this with all my new vehicles and it has never failed me.
I would pull the oil plug, count 1 - 2- 3 and then plug it back up. Check the oil level and it should be about right.

I would recommend you have the DEALER do your first oil change. Bubba the gorilla is still installing the filters at the factory.

The way I get my oil filter off:
I take my truck to the local dealer. I pay them $30 to change the oil and filter (Motorcraft only) while I sit in the lounge enjoying the complimentary donuts and coffee. Then I go home and listen to my wife complain about how fat I am getting.

I remove mine from above, I bought one of those self tensioning oil filter tools from walmart and stand on a little step ladder reaching down. Piece o cake.
