Tailgate Step

So I have had my truck for a while now & it is a little bit higher then my old truck & I thought that maybe I should have gotten the rear step. So I went to the Ford dealer to see if I could order it. I was thinking maybe $500 Nope! F.Y.I.the kit it is $1046.00 I think if need be I will go buy me a $50.00 step ladder before I spend a grand on that.

I bought my truck off the lot. It had everything exactly as I wanted it except it had the step. I thought of it as a novelty and figured it a waste of money. Boy am I glad its there now. In just the first few weeks I learned to quickly value the step as much more than a novelty.

However I've never fork over that sort of cash to add it after the fact.

I have been wondering about this. Its 375 dollars on a new truck. Seemed awful high even at that to me. I was thinking about getting a milk crate and packing it around to step up on. I am getting old and fat and its getting harder and harder to climb up and down and I just cant make up my mind if its worth it or not. I also wondered about the side steps. I just keep running up the price of a new truck with all of this stuff.

Another "it came with the step" and didn't think much of it. Its awesome. It also had the side steps and they were worthless and really look bad even tucked up so I pulled them off the second I got home with the truck.

Try a salvage yard or someone that deals with new take off parts. I've seen like new take-off tailgates w/step sell for $500 to $600. 2009 or 2010 gates should work for you. Then you'd just have to get it painted to match your truck and swap handles and emblem/rear camera if necessary. Then you could always resell your original tailgate for a decent buck too.

These trucks sit so high now a days I may kick myself later not to get it. Its getting harder and harder to climb around these days if you know what I mean. Thanks for the info on the side steps too. I was wondering if they were worth it.

There is no "kit". That $1046 is just for the step. Then you have to buy a new tailgate to put it in. The tailgates are different and not interchangeable. I wanted one so I found a new takeoff at a wreckers. I paid $600 for the gate, then I had it painted for another $350 (Razor Red triple coat$$$$) Now I have a step and a spare gate to sell.

I bought a hitchmate step from Summit racing for about $50.00. You will need to add an extension to your hitch because the step is designed for a shorter tailgate (I contacted the company about this). This step will work wtih the gate up or down whereas the Ford tailgate step only works with the gate down.

The 'man' step and box steps were on my XLT 4x4 when I bought it. I use them constantly. Wouldn't have ordered either, but now I'm glad to have both.
Just like the reverse camera and sensors. I wouldn't have ordered them but now can't imagine not having them.

Good point. I just have a $20 metal folding two step stool I leave in back of bed for use as needed. Mainly use it for getting in back when taligate down. Works great.

Something like this (but not this one):

Have you seen this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrpHPFtWZiw

I don't know anything about it other than it might be an alternative. Don't know the cost yet...

I think it is called "LivingStep"

Just found the main website: http://www.livingstep.com/
Apparently they have 2 versions. Looks to be less than $ 350.00. May be an addition to my 1998 SCAB.

Sorry must have been mistaken when the parts guy turned the monitor & showed me the fish & out of his mouth & on the fish it said "rear step kit" I guess I was wrong!! Still A grand is too much for me.
