Dumb Question Of The Day (Week??)

Okay...I've looked and looked, but can't find the answer. What are those "indentations" for on the roof of our cabs? Aerodynamics? Luggage carrier?

Sheepishly yours,

Sheepishly yours,

Panel stiffeners. Commonly used to reduce panel 'flutter', resonance and to add some structural integrity.

And, of course.. to make the dang thing harder to wash

and harder to polish or wax with a machine (polisher), lol. Good question, I never knew the answer

And, we have a winner! Thanks. Yep - I noticed while washing this weekend that those "grooves" have a tendency to get gunk in there, so it does take a bit more elbow grease.

I typically use an orbital buffer to polish, but that's not going to work on the roof. It's one of those weird things in that the more I stare at the roof, the more foreign/bizarre those indentations look. So, I'll just stop staring at them, huh?

Thanks for the answer.

Its also a place for the water just to sit after a rain or car wash,o then collect gunk and sit there. Its a pain to clean with a lifted truck too.

Also a place for rain water to collect, and then.....

Have you ever had your window open when first taking off after it rains?

My wife has gotten pretty good at reminding me to not open my window until that water has dumped out.

The first time, besides having a wet shoulder, I thought all my window/door switches would have been junked.

Two words: vent visors. (plus a pic of the roof)

Thought some would get a laugh out of this. Asking the question earlier about the roof's indentations, well I found out first hand a couple of posters mentioned.

Yesterday morning, we had a pretty good rain. At lunch, I rolled down the driver's side window since it was fairly cool. Started backing up and as I turned the wheel slightly, I was thoroughly drenched by rain that had collected in the indentations!

And...this was WITH vent visors. I didn't so much mind my shirt getting soaked, but much of the water ran down into the window well, and down the inside of the door.

Learned my lesson - drive like you stole it for a minute and THEN lower the window!

I understand what they are there for... but what about instead of being indentations, they were bumps (convex vs. concave)?
Wouldn't they work the same?
And no water collected, easier to clean/wax...

well it might been better if they put stiffeners on the back side and they would be covered up by the headliner i think its cheaper to make them the way they are.

yeah, I don't see how vent visors would stop it.

The 04-08 trucks (at least my 04) don't have this problem because they have a taller lip along each side/edge of the roof. I would step on the running board and hold onto that lip as well while washing the roof. Now I can barely hold on with my fingertips on my 09 roof edge since the lip is so small now.
