I'd bet that those of you who are dumping on the 4.6 3V here are the same ones who are dumping on the 5.0 in the 2011 and are pissed that you can't get a 6.2 without going max tow in the Platinum and Lariat. With technology, there really is a substitute for cubic inches these days.

I had a 2002 Crew cab with the 4.6 and swore up and down that the next truck I bought would have the 5.4. Before I bought my current truck the I told the salesman (a frien of the family) I wanted a 5.4. He convinced me to test drive the 4.6 3v and man what a night and day difference. On occasion I tow a 16ft enclosed trailer and with the 2v motor it felt like I had an anchor just dragging but with the 3v you hardly know there's a trailer back there. I would take the 4.6 3v again in a heartbeat.

Here are some of Hypertech's Dyno sheets. These sheets feature the stock readings, as well as Hypertech's improvements via their tuning. I'll list the PDF Links by year and motor(remember, the 2010s are mated to the new 6-Speed, while the 2008s are mated to the old 4-Speed):

2010 4.6(3V): http://hypertech.com/PerformanceGrap...4_6L_3V_V8.pdf

2010 5.4: http://hypertech.com/PerformanceGrap...5_4L_3V_V8.pdf

2008 4.6(2V): http://hypertech.com/PerformanceGrap...F_150_4_6L.pdf

2008 5.4: http://hypertech.com/PerformanceGrap...__5_4L_24V.pdf

For all those who think that the newer 4.6 isn't up to par, I urge you to consider comparing it's output against the 2008 4.6, just to see the vast performance difference. Then, when you are done with that, compare it to both 5.4s, and see just how close they really are to each other.

Thanks a lot for the info guys!!

I haven't purchased anything yet but am looking at two '07s, both with 5.4s and am still considering a new '10 w/the 4.6, actually leaning that way now. Whatever truck I get will be modded with exhaust and a programmer immediately.

Anybody with tuned 4.6s?

Remember, '07 5.4's will still have the wonderful spark plug issue. It's not as big of an issue now that folks have pretty well figured out how to change the plugs, but it's still a pain - and expensive.

Proper programmers for the 09/10's are just starting to show up.

The 5.4L at 3000rpm has 40lb-ft more torque and is even flatter down to it's lowest measured engine speed compared to the 4.6L. I have to question the stock 5.4L graph. It does not look like any chart I've seen the behavior over 3100rpm where it jumps up and down. The slopes do not look real, they look limited. Maybe just not tuned well, though...

One thing also worth considering is if you plan on putting larger tires on your truck you may be happier with the extra low end of the 5.4L. As far as buying new, its a fantastic time to buy a 2010 f150, you can get rebates considerably below invoice. No reason to buy used when you can get a new truck for near the same price and have it last that much longer for you.

EDIT: alright, please forgive me, i didn't notice the 4 pages of posts :P however, after the last post on the first page:

if fuel millage is a concern, consider that I get ~17+ in town with a 2010 5.4, and ~19+ highway...but being in school the new truck's good gas millage probably won't make up for the price difference vs. a 2008. I've driven the new 4.6 but not enough to say anything really informed. For what it's worth, it felt fine (test drive, so i never REALLY floored it or towed anything)

Well guys I pullled the trigger on a 2010 w/4.6l and I couldn't be happier. It has the 3.73 LS and SYNC... really lovin' it, moves the truck fairly effortlessly with the 6-speed. Just need to decide on what exhaust I want now.

Glad to hear we were of some help. I think you'll love the truck even more as you put more miles on it. See what we mean about the 4.6 being no slouch?

I'm jealous of your 3.73 LS. That's the one thing I didn't look into when I bought mine, and it's the only thing I regret.
