2010 Platinum, Idle Noise Like Something Metal Slammed Shut

I'm sitting in the truck in the garage (garage door open) doing a Sync upgrade and checking out what it'll do with an iPhone. The truck was on and running with the AC on and suddenly......

..... I hear a very loud noise like a metal door slamming shut somewhere underneath the truck towards the front.

It was loud enough that it scared me and it did it just once. I actually thought some kid shot a pellet gun at the truck or something....

I thought, weird. Didn't think about it again. Later in the day I get back into the truck to mess with the radio again and it's on etc. just like before and the same thing happens! It does it just once.

I've put 2500 miles on the truck and this is the first time i've heard this sound.

Anyone else experience this?

Is it a backfire? Sounds really strange.

Metal expansion maybe. Would sound much louder in a confined space.

Bigger question is, how did you manage to upgrade Sync? Been trying to download the latest patch for a month now.

maybe something loose in the engine compartment and made its way to serpentine belt or exhaust heating up or cooling down.

I'll bet its your exhaust heating up or cooling down. My 2010's muffler makes a loud sound similar to this when first starting or cooling and its bound to be horrifying noise when inside confined space. Its just metal doing its thing.

I just followed their directions. Everything went smooth. It's very intuitive at the end because somewhere on the Syncmyride site it says that after the initial "Upgrade Complete" to wait for another upgrade and a second "Upgrade Complete" message. I did not get that 2nd message even though I waited. I assume this is because I have the Sony Navigation and so the "Traffic Application" that is available with that update doesn't apply to me. I ran the Sync checker as well and it completed. There's no way to tell in the Sync user interface that it actually upgraded to 3.1. There's no line anywhere saying what version it is. The confirmation is purely based on you putting the USB key back into your computer and uploading the .xml file that is generated on the key once the upgrade is done. Based on that the website confirmed you upgraded to 3.1. I even chatted with a Ford Rep from the Sync site and they confirmed I was at 3.1. I did not notice any differences since the upgrade, everything looks the same in the interface.

Maybe use a different USB key and try? Good luck.

I hope that's it. I'll get it out of the garage and in the driveway and idle it and crawl under the thing to check it out I guess.

I have heard a sound that is similar to when the running boards retract when I have been sitting in the truck parked for extended periods of time. I know its not the running boards though because I have the doors closed. Don't know if its the same thing you are hearing but I am going to ask my service advisor to look into it and will post any result I may get. Again cant say how loud it is because im typically not in garage, etc. but can definitely feel it and notice it.
