Can't be done. They're sonic-welded together.

Don't listen to him. Someone on this forum has successfully painted theirs by opening them up. They posted pics to but I forgot his username.

I agree that i think it can be done. If you look, it sure looks like they are just glued together. I am planning on trying this soon.

There are a ton of video's on youtube about this. I watched a really good one that was 3 parts. But his was an 07 F150. Not sure how much of a difference it is. I actually have the paint and I'm ready to do mine, I just haven't had the time.

jcaru...

If you do them, please take a few pics along the way. Good to see another pittsburgher around here. What part do you live in?

Starting with 2009, they're sonic-welded. No glue or sealant like the 2008 and prior models. The only way to open them is to cut them open. If you look at the edge of the head and taillights, you'll see they're white. That's where the plastic was melted to weld them together.

It's possible that when aftermarket replacements become available, they'll be glued together and hence, able to be opened by baking.

I wish they could be opened. I'd have saved myself $550 on buying the Harley lights. Same situation with my Fusion. They're sonic-welded also. The aftermarket replacements are glued and can be opened, but I haven't gotten around to that yet.

Like I said somebody on this forum has already opened their OEM chrome headlights and painted them black.

Here are the pics:

Just pulled out my OE lights from the truck. I was half wrong. Only the tails are sonic-welded, the fronts are still glued. Oops...

07Alloy,

If I do I'll be taking pics and posting them. I just sent a PM to DanDeal to see what he did for the tails. I live east of Pittsburgh past Monroeville. I actually drive though your area to hunt in Butler county in the fall.

As far as the lift try Overdrive Automotive up in Newmarket. Ask for Howard. Got my lift there.

Jcaru,

Looking forward to seeing the pics. I work in butler but live just south of there. I grew up in warren county and do most of my hunting up there.

I keep looking at the raptor heads and sometimes they look slightly tinted too, but I am guessing that is just because of no reflection from the chrome. I need a long day with nothing to do so I can dig into them.
