What is the Best 2010 F-150 Model and Options?

I’m going to turn in my 2001 F-150 Lariat Super Crew with 154,000 miles, for a 2010, and I’m looking for the best value configuration.

My requirements are:

I go off road a lot (Snow, sand, and mud)
iPhone integration (audio and phone)
Need 4 doors (Super Crew)
Need to tow a trailer.

I was thinking 4x4 XLT, Long Bed, with Towing Package, Sync, but I was wondering if other Models, such as the Lariat or the Platinum may be better values. Also, if I go with XLT, what other good value options I should look into?

Thanks!

I won't delve into the model question too much because the "best" model is a matter of personal needs, tastes, and of course budget so you'd be the best one to answer that. However, I will say that if you go off road a lot then you should consider the FX4, as it is the off-road package truck. The difference in the FX4 vs. any of the other 4x4 models is that it has a locker. If you're not doing extreme off-roading, you'll probably be just fine with any of the 4x4 models, but it's something you might want to consider. If you want a heavily optioned XLT, it might make more sense to just upgrade to the FX4 or Lariat. The FX4 and Lariat both offer leather (Lariat it's standard, and FX4 it's an option), which the XLT does not. I have no personal experience with Ford cloth interiors, but many on this forum have said that they stain badly so that's something to consider. Also, with an FX4 or Lariat (although you have a choice in the Lariat), you get a flow-through console that I personally really like so you should look in to whether you'd want that because it's not available on the XLT (except for in the FX2 package but I doubt you're going to buy a 2wd truck). Other considerations are that the Lariat offers not only heated seats but cooled seats as well, and trust me, once you use them, you'll be very glad that you have them.

As far as the options go, I would obviously recommend 4x4 and Screw options to you since you already stated you wanted that. Depending on how heavy your trailer is you might want to consider the Max Towing Package which also comes with the large tow mirrors. I would strongly recommend you get the backup camera, especially since you'll be towing. As for the option of Sync, I think it's pretty standard on the higher level trucks. Not sure about whether it's an option or standard on an XLT, but definitely get that as well. You might want to consider Trailer Brake Controller if you'll be towing a lot and your trailer has electric brakes. Should consider whether you'd want a power sliding rear window and if you want it with defrost. Decide if you like the captain's chairs with a flow-through console or not as you will have to get a FX4, Lariat, or above for that option. I would recommend the tailgate step also, but that's just a preference thing. At first I didn't want it, but I'm so glad I got it now. You might also want to get skid plates (standard on FX4, option on other models) since you off-road a lot. Also, if you decide not to get the FX4 then definitely get a Limited Slip in whatever truck you choose. Good luck in your truck search and let us know what you decide.

+1

Easy one for me. I had an '04 Lariat Scab. When I decided that I wanted another truck with 4x4, I just stayed in the Lariat, and went with the Screw for extra room. I already liked the Lariat and was comfortable with it. I knew that I'd like the newer one. I do.

Like Cegan said, if you are going to do serious off-roading, consider the fx4. Way too many personal choices here.

Agree, to many choices. I just replaced my 2001 Lariat Supercrew 4X4 with a 2010 FX4 model. I wanted to keep with the leather seats I had before so the XLT wasn't an option. Can't go wrong with either, just depends on what you want or need. (and can afford!) Don't forget the rebates and incentives. Also, if you go to the Ford web site and sign up for F150 information and to be placed on there e-mail list they will send you a $750.00 Ford cash coupon off most Ford vehicles. I ended up getting $5,250 in rebates.

I chose the FX4 because I prefer black interior and trim, I hate wood!

It included E locking rear diff and 3.73 gears as well as the monochrome exterior I prefer. I would definitely get the backup camera it is a great deal. The Sony stereo sounds great if you don't want to add a custom system.

Thanks.

A lot to think about. I did see the incentives.

Now I'm thinking:

Lariat Screw (Continue the tradition)
4x4 (My 2001 does great for me with that configuration)
Backup Camera
Heated/Cooled Seats
Sony Audio
Sync
Tow
Steps

Missing anything?

I love my Lariat screw, and I'm sure you'll be more than happy if you get one Another option you have is that you can get a 5.5' bed or 6.5' bed. And like Sonoma said, don't forget to go on Ford's website to request a brochure so you can get that extra $750 rebate

3.55 Limited Slip Axie Ratio?

Okay, the only option I'm confused about is the 3.55 Limited Slip Axie Ratio, or the 3.73, for $300 or $700 respectively. Not sure I understand what the differences are?

It increases the tow limit slightly due to the lower gear ratio in the rear end. It will also lower all of the gear ratios in the trans once they pass through the lower 3.73 R&P set.

Punching the figures into a ratio calculator the difference is fairly minimal... assuming a 1:1 ratio for the gearing in the trans at 3500 RPM I got a figure of 89 mph with the 3.73 gears and with the 3.55 gears it would be 94 mph, a difference of only 5 mph

Assuming the same 1:1 trans ratio and a constant speed of 70 mph, the 3.55 gears would require 2604 engine RPM, and with the 3.73 gears it raises it to 2736 so about 132 RPM difference at freeway speeds, assuming the 1:1 ratio.

Changing the trans ratio to a 0.80 (I have no clue what the gear ratios are in these trucks, but 0.80 is an average top gear ratio in the transaxles I know well - VW's - and it shouldn't be that different) and checking the engine RPM difference at 70 mph it is only 106 RPM difference.

Basically, the 3.73 gears will result in slightly higher engine RPM when cruising but will offer greater pulling and towing torque over the 3.55 gears.

Off road a lot and towing a trailer... I would go for the 3.73 gearing.

The best F150 out there. Raptor, I just sat in one at the ford display at Daytona International Speedway and they have everything a Lariat has, Leather, heated and cooled seats, SYNC, and navigation, and probably the best off road truck money can buy, plus you can get the 6.2 if you want. Oh and if you can hold off for a little while, it will be offered in a super crew. That's like dating Pam Anderson, (in her prime) while seeing Angelina Jolie. Win Win!
