Where is the click sound coming from in the tailgate? The hinge, handle? may need some lube.

The tranny is one thing but the tailgate is an easy fix. White Lithium grease is your friend. Your owners manual on page 401 tells you to make sure to grease hinges, striker plates, etc..

The click is a very loud twang (on a hot day) coming from the hinge when moving the tailgate up/down from 1/2 to 3/4 closed. Almost sounds like the end of a spring is broken. Anyone know if there is a spring assist for the tailgate?

Yes, there is a spring in the tailgate to make it easier to lift.
