Have you looked at the back of the bedsides? The chrome trim has locating slots punched in the sheetmetal.

I thought about doing the same to mine at one time, but chose to keep it and not deal with the holes.

Thx for telling me this, as I simply thought it was just double sided tape. Holes would be far to much to deal with cost wise to justify taking the damn things off! Bad news is bad news =(
