Question Help needed. 2009 Check Engine Light

Ok so I was checking the air filter today to see if it needed changing. The easiest way to do this is just loosen the two clamps, unplug the MAF sensor and take off the tube from the intake to the breather box.
ANYWAY I like a dummy forgot to plug the sensor back in after putting everything back together... that is until I started the truck to move it this afternoon and the check engine light came on.
I instantly remembered and turned the truck off, plugged the sensor back in but the light remains on!

I started the truck 3 or 4 times, thinking it might go away after 3 starts but no luck.

So my question is, How do I reset the check engine light now??

Thanks for any help you guys can give.
Johnie

Unplug your battery, turn your lights on for 10 minutes, reattach battery. That should reset your computer.

I'll give it a try in about an hour.

Thanks,

When you disconnect the battery, you only have to disconnect the negative cable. Just FYI

Just drive your truck as you would for the next few days, if this code is related to forgetting to plug the sensor back in, it will clear after a few driving cycles. Just starting the truck up, doesn't do anything (you know that now).

Disconnecting the battery will certainly clear a code, but it also clears any/all adaptive learning the truck's computer has acquired during the time you've owned it. Knowing some 09/10's seem to have irregular shifting until the trans has "learned" driving patterns, I'd be tempted to hold off or I'd visit a buddy who has a code reader that can clear the code for you.

Just my 2 cents

I think the computer stores the adaptive learning so that it does not forget it. You could also just stop by an autozone and they can clear it for you. Free. Then you don't lose your radio presets.

Exclamation Update

Just an update for future people who search for this; I did but found nothing which is why I admitted my mistake to the world by starting a new thread :-)

Anyway, I disconnected the battery (single terminal, doesn't matter which actually).
Turned lights on (not sure what this does really but since it was suggested I did it anyway).

Waited 15 - 30 minutes.

Reconnected battery **

Check engine light gone!

Other observations:
I did NOT lose any presets on the radio or sat, I am thinking these must be written to the hard drive now but don't know that for sure.
I did not lose any trip information, both my A & B trip mileage was there along with my timer which I have been using this week.
I did however lose my Average MPG and the Miles to Empty went up close to 80 miles (I assume this is because the computer forgot I only get 14mpg and used some preset Ford number.... again I don't know this for sure but it would make sense.

My shifting was actually better today if anything, but it definitely was not worse. Also since I mentioned the Average fuel mileage, it was reading 15.6mpg when I pulled in the driveway this afternoon instead of the normal 14.2mpg but of course this was only for a one work day which is only 150 miles. I will try and remember to update this post next week after I put another 700 to 800 miles on it just incase it stays better (which I seriously doubt).

Also, before anyone ask, I have no idea why my truck gets such bad fuel mileage, when I first got it I always got like 19.6mpg but at some point it suddenly dropped to 14.2, my driving style and work trip is the same as always.

That’s all I noticed that I can think of off the top of my head. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Johnie

You do this to drain the battery in the computer so the settings reset.
