I'm about to buy a 2010 F-150 Supercrew 4/4 XLT. In negotiations with the finance manager over a 3yr/100K warranty. I drive 35-40K miles/year. He started off at $2100 and now says the lowest he can go is $1500.

1. Please let me know the cheapest you have been able to get the dealership down on this warranty. How low can I expect to get it.

2. Is it worth it?

 

How long do you plan on keeping the truck? Is this 3 years beyond the factory warranty?
Appears you would use up the factory warranty in two years, and then would only have 20K miles left on the extended warranty. That equates to about six months based on the info you provided. Even at $1500 (good price) that's very expensive for only 20K miles and six months of coverage.

Go to this site and get a quote. Whatever number they quote you there is only approx 2-400 mark-up.

$400 is really cheap. I've never heard of a 3yr / 100K option. I'm covered through 5 years/75K for warranty and maintenance for $1,200.

take the money you would spend on an ext warranty, and put in a cd, or money market for 3 years, then use that money incase you need to make a major repair, my old man has only drove f150's for as long as i can remember and has never had to do any thing more than maintinance on any of em, keep your money.... just my 2 cents

 

The 3yr/100k mile ESP is the entire length of the warranty, meaning, you are covered for 3 yrs or 100k miles from the day you drive off the lot. It is not in addition to the std 3/36 bumper to bumper (5/60 is powertrain only). Make sure this is a "PremiumCare" warranty, that's bumper to bumper and all inclusive. And yes, it's worth it b/c you'll be out of warranty within the first 12 months of driving the truck. So while dirtyd09 has some great advice for about 98% of us, in your situation it doesn't make sense b/c the money will only be sitting in a CD for 12 mos before it MAY need to be dipped into. And really, $1500 ain't that bad. He might have another $100-200 left of wiggle room, but that's about it.

It's not bad advice, but it's not for everyone and no offense. How much are we looking at here? 800-1500 for the ESP? Let's start w/ the higher number, 1500, throw it in a CD @ 8% (this is higher than anything I've seen) APR, in a year, you'll get 1620. 2 years 1749.60, 3 years 1889.57, 5 years 2203.99. Let's say in your 4th year of ownership, the truck breaks down, and it needs a new transmission. That's about a 2500 fix. Another year later, you need a new rear end, another costly repair. One repair on these trucks, such as the transmission can rob you the full amount in your CD and savings. Why not, get the cheap insurance to begin with? Yes, yes, I know, when you buy the extended warranty, chances are you'll never need it, but when you don't have it, that's when you kick yourself in the rear.

I've had ESPs that weren't needed, and ones I was thankful for having, it saved my @$$, maybe that's why they no longer make Pontiacs. lol

 

sure but look at the coverage, there wasnt one trans job, engine or rear end etc when i was a service advisor, where the costomer still didnt have to pay somthing avg between 250-700 out of pocket, and thats me busting down labor rates and eating parts, never once did any of those guys do their customers any favors, i have never bought one, my self but two years in the service isle fighting with them to pay for stuff left a bad taste in my mouth, I was at a large GM Dealer, so i feel your pain on the pontiac.

 

I just paid $1599 for the 5yr/100k PremiumCare. I don't know if it was a great deal but I know it wasn't a bad deal. Adds piece of mind and the electronics in this thing scares the crap out of me so worth it, to me.

 

Never buy an extended warranty at the time of sale. You can buy one anytime before your 3yr/36000 factory warranty expires. And contrary to what the thief at the dealership tells you, it will not be more expensive.

I have have put 150,000+ miles on my last three trucks, never got an ext. warranty and never had a serious thing go wrong with any of them.
