4.6 3v Engine Oil Change Question
4.6 3v Engine Oil Change Question
Hey guys I have noticed an issue over the past three oil changes and was wondering if you guys have noticed the same. After I change my oil and run the truck for about 30 seconds to check for leaks, I shut the truck down and check the fluid level and it seems to always be short about a 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart. I put the 6 quarts the book calls for but that doesnt seem to be correct from what I'm seeing on the dip stick. So let me know if you guys have noticed the same please.
Note:
1. Truck on level ground
2. Filter = FL-820s
3. Oil = 5w-20

Does the dipstick read in the hash area? Fully seated? If not keep adding until it does - about halfway, no more. That amount is then yer new crankcase capacity. Record it.
Also - if that M1 is NOT the EP formulation, I would not use it. It is not the quality it used to be. Instead, use the excellent MC 5w-20 semi-synth.
Please read through this thread - an eye-opener.

Thanks & have a great day!

If you are checking the oil immediately after shutdown, yes it will look down since oil has not drained down at that point. Also as long as it is in the do not add crosshatch area, you do not need to add more. It does not need to be up to the full mark.
Thanks guys, no I'm not checking it right after shutdown I clean up the garage real quick then check it so about 3 to 5 minutes after shutdown. It seems to be sitting right at the bottom of the hash marks, and the dip stick is fully seated. After adding about a 1/2 quart it sits right in the middle of the hash marks just like it should.
Also I dont want to change the subject to which oil is better, I choose Mobil 1 and like the results I'm sure there are better but I still choose to use it in my vehicles.

I fully acknowledge and support that this is your right. However I would be remiss in not pointing out the following, in case you were no apprised of these fairly recent changes to M1 - from a recognized expert:
... After Katrina, Mobil went with a Gp III base which is a synthetic like Castrol and the rest, excluding the non API certified Amsoil and Royal Purple which are a Gp IV. M1's formulations are not showing any premium performance versus that of any normal dino oil. You'll generally see iron higher in analysis with M1. Some is corrosion as the non-polar properties of the base they use literally runs off of the parts when you shut the engine down. The HT/HS rating on the M1 5w-20 is 2.6 which means it is at the absolute bottom of barrel and just barely making grade....if the oil is in grade at all. For normal wear, a HT/HS rating is 2.8. HT/HS rating is directly related to bearing wear. Since you have it, use it but I would find something a lot cheaper that's a lot better next time. In regards to the Fram filters, you'll never find another Fram on anything I own. There is a thread here from a Fram tech that got hammered pretty bad as he apparently couldn't answer the hard questions. I'd try to find somebody to pawn them off on and buy a good filter. Your truck, your money.
Good luck & cheers!

O God, here we go again with another Mobil 1 argument, please stop !!!!
But to the original post, I hope you figure it out. From the post title I expected to hear about too MUCH oil being in there. See this post:

Good luck in what you can find out. Thanks.

It's not a debate, it's fact. Mobil 1 is one of the worst ones out there, but people choose to disregard facts just because it goes against them.

I like my oil level to be about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way up the hashmarks after it has sat overnight. It doesn't burn oil so I don't feel the need to have it filled to the brim.
