Friend buying an F150, help me out.
My friend is wanting a regular cab, 4x4 F150. There are two of them in our area, both are STX's. One is the 4.6L 3v with the 6-speed transmission. The other is the 4.6L 2v with the 4-speed transmission. He only drove the 2v, which was really nice. How much more power does the 3v engine have, and how much better is the 6-speed than the 4-speed? He's ready to buy in the next few days. He's really torn because the one with the 2v engine already has a lift, 20x9 XD Addicts, 35" Terra Grapplers, and LineX spray-in bedliner, adding a $2900 addendum to the sticker, so the 2v is actually a little higher in price. Any info would help.
Might be harder on gas mileage to push those 35's, I dunno, the STX's look nice but I would be looking at the V8's...you got a bomb *ss truck btw...

4.6L is a V8. In fact you can't get anything but V8s for 09-10
the 4.6 2v with a 4 speed is night and day compared to the 4.6 3v and 6 speed. Ive drivin plenty of both and I can say the 4.6 3v with the 6 speed feels more powerfull then a 04-08 5.4 3v with a 4 speed.
The 2v truck has the lift because it is a cheap truck and they hope some kid comes along and has to have it. What is he using the truck for? I think the 2v has the worst tow ratings, around 5000 lbs. The 3v has more torque and more hp (298 hp vs 248 hp) and it gets better mileage than the 2v. It sounds like he wants the best deal so sell him on the increased power and fuel economy.
my bad i don't know what i was thinkin, i guess i shouldn't stare at this forum for more than 2 hours at a time, i start getting delusional....

Thanks guys. The tires on it are 305/65R20's, so maybe they aren't 35's. Thanks for the replies. It just confirms what I already thought. We went out all day yesterday looking at Super Duties, and for around the same price as a used (04-06) Super Duty, he found that he could get a brand new F150. I have to say that I am totally in love with the regular cab, short bed F150's. He plans on using it as a daily driver. The truck didn't even have the towing package on it, since the 2v engine can't tow much. Hopefully he will be on here soon to tell you about whatever he ends up buying.
I told him twice, and he doesn't seem to care. It's more about looks than speed to him, really. I can personally attest to that, as I rode around with him all day yesterday. I must have called him "Grandma" more times than I could count. The 2v will be fine for him. I do admit though, the truck looks awesome.
imo the difference between the 3v and 4v on paper is significant in appearances but look at the actual ratings invers to rpms, besides if hes gonna haul any thing the 2v or 3v will be just fine back in the day my dad used to haul a 21ft searay with a 4.6l on a 98 f150 xl either will do the job of daily driver ocasional towwer. dont get caught up in the hype which is very easy to do the new f150 is a great truck in any package and he will be satisfied im sure of it. end of the story same truck same price take the 3v, but dont be swayed by the 15 extra actual horse and minimal difference in fuel economics by the way the 305 is a 32-33" tire depending on manufacturer get as close as 34 actual size .

This discussion is about the 2V 4.6L vs. the 3V 4.6L. I don't know where the 4V came from.
The 3V is rated to have 44 hp more and more torque too. But the biggest advantage comes from the 6-speed gearbox. This is not hype, it really makes the engine much more suitable for towing or hauling near the limits and the gain in fuel economy is not insignificant. Even if the difference was only 1 MPG worse efficiency, that means you will have to pull 7% more greenbacks out of your wallet everytime you fill up. I would rather spend the left-over money on beer or something I could actually enjoy.
These facts are not hype. Everyone could appreciate more power, more gears and more money left over in their wallet.
and im not argueing the obvious, but to completly disreguard the tried and true 4.6l 2v with a 4 speed is well just stupid.... thats the power pack that started the fx4 way back when the 5.4 was optional not standard. it 248@4700 rpms and 292@5700 rps less than 20ft lbs of torquedifference between the two. with only a 1 mpg change on highway due to all he extra gears i suppose. all im saying is that engine to engine the differences arent impressive and i would not buy a truck i didnt like, because it had the engine every one else did.
