Towing relay and Fan belt

Hey there,

Can anybody give me some advice regarding the relay used when towing. I have a 2009 FX4, purchased early 2009. After towing a boat for most of last year, I now occassionally tow a camping trailer. Both trailers are brand new, i.e. their electrics all work. Initially with the boad trailer some of the trailer lights did not work, i.e. left brake and indicator light, and although I got the electrics checked, it still didn't work. I didn't think very much of it.

However, now, with the new camping trailer, I have a similar scenario: once hooked up to the car (for this trailer they installed a 7-pin N UK connection), my left indicator goes crazy, i.e. blinks like a fuse has gone and the trailer indicator does not work at all.

The guys who build the trailer say, I need a higher AMP relay for towing.

My dealer here in the UAE (Al Tayer) say, there is no higher AMP relay for towing, the standard one should come as capable for both the truck itself plus for towing. They think I have a wiring problem on the truck!

Any bright ideas?

David

P.S. on another note: my dealer here, as said Al Tayer, the only Ford dealer in the UAE, is not capable of supplying me with a spare fan belt for the 2009. They only have the ones for the previous models on stock. Question: would the fanbelts from the older model still work on the 2009 model? If not, can anybody recommend a website in the US where I can order the fanbelt for the 2009 model from?

you don't need a higher amp relay because there isn't one, and if your truck has factory tow package with the braje controller then your truck is not wired wrong your trailers are.

Motorcraft P/N is JK61033, Dayco P/N is 5061025. They are carried by rockauto.com, I don't know if they will ship overseas.

Deano-FX4 - I'm not sure if this applies to what your talking about, but I had to put a relay and fuse in under the hood and I do have the factory electric brake controller.

The relay and fuse were in the glove box when I bought the truck, but prior to me putting it in, all my trailer lights seem to work fine and I didn't notice any difference.

Maybe a local mechanic is familiar with US built export trucks and Euro trailers. Is this a US truck or an export model? It sounds like the truck is wired for US DOT regulation trailers and your caravan is wired to the SUV or Euro spec. I think euro has separate amber turns, there is no provision in the 7 way RV connector for those. You would need a 4 to 5 wire converter on the trailer side if such a thing existed. I am assuming all of this since I have seen none of it...

Maybe you can post pics of the truck and trailer connectors.
