F150 Diesel Ever Going To Really Happen?

Does anyone know when Ford is REALLY going to come out with a diesel in the F150's? I've seen all kinds of info on the internet.....I'm hoping Ford goes through with it and doesn't bag it like GM has done with the "mini Duramax" they were supposed to be putting in the 1500's.

Almost every benefit of a turbocharged high pressure direct injection diesel engine can be had in a turbocharged high pressure direct injection gasoline engine without the NOx and low temperature issues on a diesel. Broad torque curve, check. 25% better FE than similar powered naturally aspirated engine, check. Ford has decided the Ecoboost is the right tool for that market and I agree.

You hit the nail on the head. While I haven't heard anything official anywhere that states the F150 will not be getting a diesel, I do know that they shelved the project indefinitely until they could research the market more. However, the more I hear about the Ecoboost engines, the more I believe that these are a better option over a small diesel engine here in the states. They share many of the same benefits of a diesel powerplant like an amazing torque curve and supposedly better fuel economy without any of the additional cost associated with buying and owning a diesel.

Besides, todays diesels have so much emissions crap on them that they don't really even have the same fuel economy advantage that the older diesels did. All they do is cost more to buy and and cost more to maintain. You can thank the greenies for that. It's too bad as well, there are many cars and midsize trucks available outside of the states that have great diesel powerplants.

Baby deisel would not sell, so they wont make em.

Prior to 2007 would have been great idea, now no reason to have em.

If we picked up 3,000,000 jobs suddenly, and the gov't dropped emmisions requirments, and if price of diesel was low or lower (despite what the fact the new (old) 3,000,000 jobs would cause cost of fuel to rise).. then you would probably see new F150 diesel.

I asked the Service manager at Cros Roads/ Cary about the new engines. Ford is being very tight lipped about the new engines. First up they haven't even had anyone trianed on the new 6.7 Powerstroke, although they have already been told they will have trucks in stock sometime March / Ealry April. Second 6.2 Gas V8. Ford keeps pushing it back. Definitely wil not be sen in F150 in 2010, except possibly Raptor, do not have a date for availability in Super Duty or Raptor. Finally small diesel has been indefinitely psotponed due to other projects. decsisions will be made at futur date, depending on succes of Eco-Boost engines.

I would not hold my breath waiting for a small diesel in a 150!

2011 - "Power or MPG" Choose Your Own Adventure.

Exactly. The way things are today, you'd be more likely to see a Hydrogen-powered F150 before a diesel. Perhaps even a trash-fueled Flux Capacitor.

Keep your eyes peeled for any info on the 2011's and the new EcoBoost engine. Unfortunately I doubt you'll hear anything official from Ford until much later in the year. I have a feeling that engine will be the volume seller once it hits the streets. The big question is exactly how much MPG does it get, we've pretty much seen the other numbers (HP, Torque, etc), now just waiting on the real-world MPG implications. And of course, if they redesign the F150 for 2012 and make it lighter, that'll help the MPG's even more.

Also, check out Rambo's recent thread on the 2011 6.2l as well, if more power rather than better MPG is your thing. Personally I just want better MPG, as I'm already the first one off the line at nearly every stoplight. I bet 75% of the time I'm the first one, way ahead once the light hits green, so it's not power my truck needs, it's a less thirsty engine!
