Windshield washer pump problems

Anyone having issues with their washer pumps on the 09 trucks? Mine works occasionally but sometimes not at all. I have had 3 separate times when the pump would not spray for MULTIPLE 10 second attempts. You hold the button in and can hear the pumps working but no luck on the spray. This will go on for a minute or 20! Had to pull over on a 4 lane highway in the dark in wet snow / ice pellets to dump a bottle of water on the windshield.

And yes, i use -40 rainx washer, it is full and no there is no ice build up or snow on the cowl. (went over this with my service manager already). There answer is that this is normal! Well, i get a new truck (F150) every 2 years and never had this problem before. I understand that there is some delay expected, but no washer in multiple 10 second pump cycles (i timed it, nothing else to do while you wait along an interstate for your 50,000 dollar truck to work right)

Anyone with some hints or insight before i go to my dealer on the 13th to be told there is no problem?

Can't help with the problem. But if the service manager or whomever at your dealer is playing the "That's Normal" game. Tell him, grab the keys from say 3 new F150's on their lot and see if the condition exists.

I've used this game to my advantage on a number of different occasions.

How often do you use your sprayers. If not often, what can happen is the methanol evaporate over time and allow your lines to freeze. It is always recommended to operate the system once in awhile.

Otherwise you more than likely have a kink in your washer line if you can hear the pump running. Did the washers operate before okay? You might also just have a disconnected line somewhere.

If that is a no go, then likely a bad pump though you can hear it running. It's internal impellor could have come apart.

And in NO WAY is this a normal unless you have frozen lines.

I have the same issue, but i have a felling my issue is in the control arm. I sometimes have to push and hold the button and sometimes have to push and push and push until I find the right spot. The reason i think it might be in the arm is because just last night, i could not get the high beams to come on until about 30 minutes into my commute home. But no issues this morning.

If you can hear the pump running, try filling the bottle right up. I have noticed there is no "no fluid" sign when the tank is empty too.

I keep it full or 3/4's all the time. Up here in Ontario Canada you don't have much time for the stuff to evaporate. You are on the sprayer quite a bit.

I checked the lines but didn't see anything out of the normal, The impeller sounds like more of the problem.

I will keep you updated after the dealer gets a crack at it.

Other than than, very nice truck. Still don't know if i like the anti skid, spin, rollover system. If you have to get out of the road quickly the truck automatically applying brakes and cutting power can be a huge problem. Sometimes technology is not the best option! Miss the old standard days when you could easily select a higher gear to reduce wheel spin and push in the clutch to disconnect the drive train.

My 04 does it too if I haven't used them in a while... Even with winter fluid. Normal

Any updates?

My '12 keeps freezing the tank or lines in single digit temps or even into the teens. Is it the pump area freezing or the lines/emitters?

I'd recommend getting this in front of your dealership for diagnosis, WoodsTruck. How many miles do you have on it?

80,000 - 28 months of use

I use it for working in the woods and pulling my sled trailer in the winter so I get out in the elements on a daily basis.

Hopefully the OP got it fixed after he started this thread 5 years ago
