Is there a method of disabling the a/c while having the defrost running, aside from pulling the fuse as I would like to be able to turn on a/c when i need to defog the windows?

defrost needs ac to remove moisture from the air.

 

You could just unplug it at the compressor.

 

Then you would get moisture on the inside of the windows?

 

Thats old school thinking. My dad used to think he should disconnect the AC compressor in the winter to prevent damage. Defrost needs dry air to work, and thats why all cars run the AC in defrost mode. It has no ill effect on the compressor and probably helps keep oil circulated. Just leave it alone and enjoy how nice it works.

 

On my 2010, the AC Compressor cycles even when I'm on Heat Only and diverted to the floor.
My Ford Ranger does the same thing.... I'm not sure what the logic is behind that.

 

Couldn't said it better. It helps to have the AC running several times during winter. I worked on vehicle AC for many years. And keeping the system flowing once in while will give you more years of service. And yes, the dryer air will help defrost your windshield. That's why the engineers designed it that way.

 

Just leave it alone... it will be fine.. trust all of us.

 

So let me see, you want to decrease the effectiveness of your defroster whilst at the same time decreasing the service life of your AC compressor. Hmmm, I'm thinking that taking an axe to your truck would be a good option. Is your neck red by the way? Just wondering.

 

You can rewire the hvac controls so it doesn't come on automaticly. I did it on my Canyon too. Mainly because the defroster is all i use and dont need the compressor on ALL the time. When the windows begin to fog up, i simply hit the ac button and i'm good.

 

well scott seemed to understand the question, I drive with the defrost 99% of the time, if/when I want ac to run with the defrost I would prefer to simply hit the a/c button, however on a 7 hour hwy run, I have 0 need to use the a/c for the whole drive, and yet I prefer not to have the heat come from the dash or floor, keep thinking.....

 

In the winter I run it on the defrost and feet only. I never use any other setting. Defrost AC is good don't try and fight it.

 

You do realize that this will give your dealer one reason to void your warrantry right? And, they're just looking for any reason these days.

 

Depends on how its done. As with anything that voids your warranty, they have to find out you tampered with it first, and that your tampering led to an issue. I guarantee you they do not pull apart any modules to check them. If the bcm isn't doing what its supposed to, bam! new bcm. same with the turn signals, pcm, window motors, radio ect. If you being it in for an defroster issue and they see the ac doesn't turn on and get no signal from the hvac unit, they will just replace the hvac unit.
