Question about boosting power on the 5.4

Hey Folks, I am new to this site but a long time Ford truck owner. I own five Ford trucks for my contracting business. I currently have an 07 F150SC 4*4 with the 5.4. I am looking to buy a 2010 F150 Super Crew 4*4, 6.5' bed with the 5.4. This truck should be great for work and my family. My only concern is power. It will have an aluminum utility cap on it full time filled with tools and parts for my business. My question is what aftermarket power parts can I install to boost the torque. I am sure that exhaust and intake will help but what about tuners? Short of installing a supercharger is it possible to bring the torque up to 450ftlbs? (I think stock is 390?)

Thanks,

Brian

I installed a HyperTech Max Energy on my 09. I talked to one of the engineers at HyperTech and he said " Ford left a lot on the plate with the rated power and torque ". It really makes a world of difference: 35 HP/42 LB/FT of torque all for less than $400.

I think you are preemptively deciding that it won't have enough power.

Or just wait for the 2011's. Supposedly they'll have new engines by then with more power, and perhaps more MPG.

Although personally I'm worried the MPG from the EcoBoost will be terrible, seeing as how it can't even help the Taurus get more than 17mpg.

I have been wondering how on earth they think that ecoboost is going to get better fuel economy than the current 5.4 when it cant even do better than it in the Taurus! they must have somthing up their sleeve

The Ecoboost get the same millage as the regular 3.5 V6 in the Taurus, but with 100hp and 100ft-pd more.

If that's not good, what is?

Lightbulb Thanks.

Oh.

That explains the price diff. then, more power even though same MPG.

Thank you, at least I get it now. I couldn't figure out why someone would buy a Taurus and spend way more for the EcoBoost engine version, when it didn't do jack for MPG. Lot more HP, no improvement in MPG.

Guess I personally could give a crap about power, just want better MPG. All 4 F-150's I've owned drove just fine, all I ever cared in terms of power was a better take-off from a start so I could merge onto highways safely. I'm always ahead of everyone on the roads all the time, so I've got plenty of power. The '09 is much better at take-off than my previous 3 trucks, so that's not much of an issue anymore either. I'd just like to go to the gas station less often, every week & a half gets old fast, and the money spent isn't fun. Sure, I could buy a better MPG vehicle so no need to bring up those old arguments. Always know what I'm getting into. Just would like to see better MPG, and when I heard of this EcoBoost engine, it seemed FMC was touting it as a great MPG saver. Seems they were incorrect, all it does is get much better HP at the same MPG. They should have called it PowerBoost. Whoopee doo.

How does this effect your fuel economy?

With my Tonneau cover, I get about 15.5 city and 22 highway.

What they should have done is kept the ecoboost power the same as the 5.4 and increased the MPG then had the 6.2 for people who wanted more power.

Sopher, I really can't say what the difference in my MPG is with the HyperTech downloaded because I only have around 900 miles on my 09 and I'm a leadfoot. Right now I'm averaging around 13.5 MPG. But when my 2010 Lariat gets here in about two weeks I will swap the HyperTech to it and try to drive conservatively and get some real world numbers and post those

I bought a black Lariat because I got a deal I couldn't refuse even though I did not want black. Don't get me wrong, black is beautiful when it has just been cleaned but 10 minutes later......... My 04 lariat was oxford white, my 07 lariat was white sand, and my 2010 is white platinum. I just don't have the time to wash my truck every week like I used to, and I really enjoy my truck more when it is clean- it's a matter of pride. I just bought a CoverCraft Noah cover ( $ 303 delivered ) and I guess I should have bought it sooner, but now I'm saving it for my 2010. I cannot park my truck in my garage because I have two SeaDoo's in it plus all my woodworking tools for building stuff and projects. If I win the lottery I will build a giant separate garage for all my toys !!

Ohh i see. I would never buy black vehicles. Like you say 20 mins after washing it's back to looking dusty. Thats the reason i went for white sand. Looks amazing even after a few days of grubby road driving.

The 5.0 is rumored to be hitting 400/400. Supposed to be in the F150 and the Mustang.

x2 on that. I just traded my '99 SCab 4.6L for the '10 SCrew 5.4 FX4. Holy Cow, what a difference in the power! The 4.6 was in good shape and not worn out by any means, but I just passed a truck going up a steep grade on the way home in the new ride, and it was like I was shot out of a canon compared to what I was used to...I literally thought to myself, "Jeese, I didn't really need to pass him like THAT."
