Chin spoiler air diffuser ?
Chin spoiler air diffuser ?
Was at the dealer today to have my fusion looked at. Noticed the 2010 F150's have a chin spoiler that sticks down about 3 inches deep. I don't have one of these on my 2009, does anyone else? Or is this 2010 only? Wondering how much of a gain in MPG was seen by Ford engineers when they tested it. I remember reading the 09 Escape had some extra spoilers added to it around the rear suspension and the nose that was supped to help with MPG.
Drawback is ground clearance however.

The "chin" (never heard it called that before) is there to create a low-pressure area when travelling down the highway. Air moves from higher pressure area (in this case the engine bay) to lower pressure area (the chin) which helps cool the engine bay. Many times people damage or remove this spoiler then report higher engine temperatures. !!
This has NOTHING to do with MPGs. It may help pull the vehicle down (again, low pressure) but its main purpose is engine cooling

The chin spoilers on the new Tahoe Hybrid and reg chev/gmc trucks are for mileage. The hybrid runs real deep but probably gets caught on a common parking lot curb it's so low. An acquaintance of mine took his off his new GMC truck for ground clearance, they made it easily removable so he told me.
Don't really care because they look like A$$$ and failed all the side impact crash tests !!!
