Supercrew: XL vs. XLT
Supercrew: XL vs. XLT
After much deliberation I am down to these two trim models. If I bought the XL I would plan on swapping out the upper fascia with a PTM one (planning to do a PTM grill regardless of trim) and the mirrors with the larger towing mirrors. According to Edmunds, the towing mirrors are available on the XL, but only as a fleet item, and they require the XL Power Group. Since the XL Supercrew comes standard with power locks and windows I'm assuming this is the XL Power Group? If so, I could order the mirrors separately and install them myself?
Looking at some figures, the price difference is about $1,500 (also includes 5.4L in the XLT vs. 4.6 3V in the XL). Seems worth it in my opinion.
Thanks.

Thanks. The power numbers aren't that different so I figure either will work great.
After reading your sig I thought about the middle seat. The XLT seat is much nicer, but in the 2010's the material is different from the XL to the XLT so I'd have to do a swap too for them to match.

I love my XL, all it needs are power locks and a painted grille, which are both fairly cheap mods that I will be doing soon. I actually like the interior better on the XL than the XLT because it is darker. I dont know the instructions on how to install the mirrors, but it has to be a simple thing to do and you can certainly buy them youself from Ford or a 3rd party retailer. I'm sure the 4.6 is a plenty powerful engine but I am a guy who loves engines and I really wanted the 5.4. It was hard to find my model with a 5.4 but I was able to find one.

The seat cloth is different on the 04-08s also but the XL is comfortable enough in my opinion. I just saw the XLT seat covers one day from a member on here for $40 locally basically brand new so could not pass them up, some day I will find time to install them... they are in a box for now.
I'd say it's worth the $1,500 to get the XLT. If you're going to get new bumpers, PTM, and mirrors you're gonna prolly be close to if not over $1,500. Plus like you said, the material in the 2010 is nicer than the XL.
Base to base:
Here is what you will get standard on the XLT crewcab that you will not get standard on the XL crewcab: chrome front and rear bumpers, body color front bumper upper fascia, premium cloth interior, driver manual lumber, carpeted flooring, floor mats, fade-to-off interior lighting, power accessory delay, AMFM STEREO CD player, auxiliary audio input jack, speed-compensated volume control and an information display, cruise control, tripminder, outside temp and compass display, rear cup holders, MYKey, color coordinated steering wheel, plus the chrome grille and surround, aluminum wheels, (vinyl flooring is optional)

Most of those features you can probably live without for the right negotiated price... I got 10K off of MSRP of my XL which was about 30% off of MSRP. You can also add them for much cheaper then at the dealer as I did.
The XL is not the only trim level that gets discounted and you are comparing apples to oranges, 2008 to the 2010. There is really no comparison between the two. He can live without the XL for the right price. $1400 is worth it for what you get and the 5.4L is a factor.
Sounds good... buy the truck that works for you pricewise and needs wise.
Thanks for everyone's responses.
I'm not going to be replacing the bumpers and after looking at some XLs today, I think I can live with the black upper fascia. If it comes down to it a new one fromis $234 (plus paint). The mirrors are $270.
From my numbers, the difference is just over $1,850. That's without the SYNC system on either. There are a lot of differences, but most of them aren't necessarily benefits to me. The mirrors would be slick, the extra instruments appeal to me and a little nicer interior would be comfy. But I actually want vinyl floors, will be the driver 99% of the time and not a fan of chrome. So really the mirrors and motor are the two most significant differences for me.
This is what you'll get for the $1400.-$1500. on the XLT:
power heated side mirrors with external mirror-mounted turn signal indicators and auto-dimming driver-side feature
auto-dimming rearview mirror
temperature and compass display
six-way power driver’s seat
power adjustable pedals
power accessory delay
SYNC
tripminder
body color front bumper upper fascia
chrome front and rear bumpers
aluminum wheels
chrome grille and surround
premium cloth interior
color coordinated steering wheel
carpeted floors
floor mats
rear cupholders
etc.
Plus you won't have to hassle with buying and installing everything yourself and some of this you can't install yourself. Plus you will be able to get other options not available on the XL and the 5.4L. It seems worth it to me too.

The towing capacity of both is well within what I would need. Currently a pop-up camper or open trailer with two motorcycles, small chance of a small toyhauler in the future. I hope to keep this truck until long after it's resale has fallen to diddly squat, regardless of trim package. Your statement is 100% correct though. The vinyl floor will probably be a resale killer too. My main hobby is scuba diving, it might be possible to fit 4 divers plus gear in a Civic, but a new F-150 would do a much better job
