Different dealer approach to hard 1-2 shift

I had the transmission reprogramming TSB applied to my truck at about 1,200 miles, and was told to drive it for a while and it was sure to get better.

Well, no dice, at almost 7,000 miles. So I took it in yesterday; it looks like Ford has a new fix for the issue. They are producing a new driveshaft, which will not be available until late November or early December specifically for the "clunk" that occurs on takeoff and stop. Dealer will call when it comes in; I will post up after install with impressions.

Shifts worse now than it did before the TSB.

Seriously...! Is it a *NEW* TSB for the drive shaft? # Please.

Curious, what wheel base do you have. I have often though that the clunk may be associated with the longer 157" base.

I had a dealer tell me if there was a problem the check engine light would be on and "the hard shift is easier on the clutch and the transmission will last longer" that's a quote. He was also impressed with my 09 FX4 said he hasn't seen on yet... I won't be returning to that dealership.
Mr. Bacon Jr. What truck are you driving around, just curious?

update, looking through things later today i did find a service message saying there will be a new TSB but it only appears to apply to trucks with two piece drive shafts.

Deano,

A two piece is for the 157" wheelbase, right? Even after the TSB for the tranny, my truck feels like the drive shaft is bound up and finally breaks free upon initial start up. It also feels like the shaft is out of balance at low speed. I am crossing my fingers that THIS will be the fix I have been waiting for.

Any chance you can post the TSB # and the symptoms it hopes to solve etc?

Thanks in advance,

Round II

there is no official tsb as of yet just a message saying one is forth coming sometime in nov, but it aims to fix the condition you are experiencing, that bump feel.

Hi. I experienced the bump shift on mine initially, and after 1500 miles or so, I went back to the stealership and asked that they reset the learn cycle on the tranny. On the way home, I drove it pretty hard and did so for the next 200-300 miles- burn outs, tramp the gas, hard stops, ... I am not saying that this will work for everyone, but it worked for me. The bump shift is all but gone.

IMHO, the bump is tranny based, not so much drive shaft. It could be a combination of the 2 components, the drive shaft is exaggerating the bump, but I would recommend asking the dealer to reset the learn cycle and see if that helps.

Keep on truckin.

The initial “CLUNK” that MR B is calling out (correct me if I am wrong B) has nothing to do with the transmission shifting…we are still in first gear. Like I said, it is like the shaft is bound up and breaking loose or the torque converter is locking down with a jolt. The harder you accelerate from a stop the less noticeable it becomes. If you are gently accelerating or have a trailer in tow…look out Sally, you’re gonna get bumped at every light.

On another note the TSB…has not solved my shifting issues.

Bingo- I am driving a 157" wheelbase truck as well. I think we may have a winner... it has always felt to me like play in the drivetrain after the tranny, kinda like my old F-Stock race cars used to when the U-joints were worn.

Will keep everyone posted- will be late November (read, early December) before the part is available.

Also, dealer said the new drive shaft was supposed to have a different balancing mechanism. I am keeping my fingers crossed as well.

Ditto....157" wheelbase here to with the same feeling on take off. I only really feel it if I am real light on the go peddle though and am waiting to feel it... ...and most of the time I am not.

I took my 157" screw in for scheduled maintenance, mentioned a subtle "ratcheting" feel under @ 2 mph in 1st gear when pulling out slowly. Doesn't do it every time. I am a decent mechanic, do most of my own work on older stuff. I told them it feels like the Trac-Lok clutches were sticking and slipping, or else something sticking in the u-joints. They said they did not feel it on their test drive, and there was no TSBs for this.

I bet this faulty driveshaft deal is what I am feeling, I will mention it on next service visit.

On the 1-2 shift harshness, I have adjusted my driving style to drive through it. It seems worst when you are in it pretty good and then leave off gas slightly to "suggest" an immediate upshift - it shifts, but feels too abrupt. I am also getting an occasional WEAK/slipping 3-4 shift when the tranny is cold. I think I'll do the tranny code reflash just for shizzengiggels, so I can relearn the thing now that it is broken in. :-)

My '05 Screw had a clunk/slip that occurred when accelerating and turning at the same time... the dealership replaced he drive shaft and life was good after that.

I notice it some with my '09, but it's getting better and I think I'm used to it after 4,500 miles. In fact, I'm highly impressed with this tranny/5.4L combo... I was hauling my bike, gear, and luggage along with my wife and daughter this past weekend. I made 2 passes on 2 lane highway that required quick acceleration... this thing was smooth as silk with no hesitation whatsoever. I couldn't say that about my '05 by any means.
