Fixing a Busted Mirror on 2009 F150 KR
A passing bus in another late got too close and hit my mirror. Upon closer inspection I found out that the mirror itself and the casing were intact. The mirror did however get ripped out of the motor mount (I can see white screws, clips, gel and wires, still connected)
Question: how feasible would it be to take the mirror apart and simply re-seat it back? If so, how can one take one apart? Seems like I would have to somehow get behind the mirror to seat it back.
Would be nice to fix it since the dealer wants $700+labor and I have a high deductible on my insurance.

Have you tried searching ebay or anything like that. Alot of times you can get some take-offs for pretty cheap. I dont know what kinda mirrors you have now, but here is something you could look at.

call Domenic at Tasca. should be able to get one for less than $175 and it is an easy do-it-yourself project!!
now if it is a TT Telescoping mirror, i want your broken one. i will pay shipping to me. i am trying to add some front lights to mine and i need a broken one to experiment with.

I would have definitly followed the bus blowing my train horns until it stopped and I slapped the driver silly. But violence is not the answer. The glass is usually like a $20 part, much much cheaper than the whole mirror assembly.

I would go by the glass place and see what they can do. Was it a city bus? School bus? They should be paying.....

It is a regular mirror (non-TT). The mirror is intact. The housing is intact, no visible damage. The turn signal lights on the mirror casing work. The wiring is intact, the mirror motor seems to work. It is the ball joint between the housing and the back of the actual mirror that seems to be either broken or disconnected somehow.
So I am trying to figure out how to put that particular part together.

Track down the bus company and make them pay to fix it!!!
Otherwise, if you have comprehensive (or collision for that matter) insurance, have it fixed under your insurance policy. Check your deductible to see which is lower and claim it under that... if it's comprehensive, just say it was vandalism... if collision is lower then tell them the bus did it.
I'd seriously go after the who ever runs the bus though (city, county, whatever...)

I was backing out of my garage and clipped the garage door with the big honking driver side mirror of my '09 FX4 SCREW. The glass portion popped out of the motor mount and the ball joint was shattered, it was hanging by the wires. The mirror housing itself was fine. I went to the dealer and they wanted $381 for a whole new mirror assembly. I found the motor at tousley ford parts depot for $31 shipped, and it was easy to fix. If the mirror housing is intact (especially where the motor screws in to the motor mount) and the glass piece itself is not broken, this is a cheap and easy fix.

Everything works on the mirror except the ball joint from the motor was broken. It was in for 7500 mile service plus 2 other minor warranty issues. They wanted $650 for the entire mirror assembly (folding, defrost, autodim type) plus labor. YGBSM. I walked over to parts and they gave me a schematic of the mirror and part numbers. I then asked service to just swap out the motor. They did and everything works perfect. I think it was about $95 for everything. I could have done a diy but it was already in for service and I didn't have the time to fix right now. Thanks to every for the info.

Like others I called my local dealership and they said $500 plus install to fix. I asked if sure and check for just the motor and they said they did but have to buy whole mirror. Luckily I have an uncle who works at a Lincoln/Mercury dealer as the Parts Manager. I explained to him the part and sure enough he found it. I was worried I would break the mirror installing but I didn't. Took my longer to get the part than reinstall. Below are the steps I took and I recommend going to the Parts department and ask for an expanded view of the mirror to get the part number.
#1 - Inspect entire mirror to ensure only motor broken. (I was lucky housing/mirror were fine).
#2 - I marked the back of the mirror with the wire color connections to when re-assembled I was sure no mistake
#3 - Remove "broken" motor using #10 "star" bit (there are 3)

#4 - Remove wire harness that connects to the back of the now broken motor
#4 - Remove "disk" CAREFULLY with flat head screw driver that attaches the BROKEN part of the motor to the mirror. NOTE: I marked on the mirror where the new one should line up using a big "circle" on the broken part just to be safe.
#5 - Get new motor and attach previously removed wire harness
#6 - Re-install 3 "*" screws to remount motor
#7 - TEST to ensure motor is moving PRIOR to reconnecting mirror
#8 - Reconnect wires to mirror (I had heated/self dimming)
#9 - CAREFULLY line up mirror back in housing
#10 - CAREFULLY apply pressure to the MIDDLE of the mirror until you hear the mirror "seat" back in the motor disk
#11 - Test mirror to ensure proper installation/alignment
#12 - Going forward do what I am doing and pull in mirrors prior to entering garage
