Opinion? '01 5.4L vs '09 4.6L?
Opinion? '01 5.4L vs '09 4.6L?
Looking to upgrade my 2001 Supercrew Lariat 2WD (5.4L) with a new 2009. The '01 has been a great truck - 150K miles and it hasn't missed a lick!
While I would like to get another Supercrew Lariat ('09) with the 5.4L, the dealers around here have some really good incentives on the XLT's with the 4.6L. Looking at the published specs, the '09 4.6L has more HP and torque than my '01 5.4L. Curious how well the '09 4.6L runs with the new 6 speed compared to my '01 5.4L with the 4 speed. I would consider an XLT with the 5.4L, but they seem to be pretty hard to find....
My question to y'all....
Anyone go from the 5.4L in the '01 series trucks to the 4.6L in the '09 trucks?
How do they compare?
What do I use my truck for?
Primarily commuting and hauling around the family.
Occasionally pull a travel trailer (6,000# +/-).
Maximum towing capacity isn't a significant factor to me (but I will get the towing package on whatever truck I pick)
And I'm only looking at 2WD - dont' need 4WD.
Or should I suck it up and pony up the additional $3K+ and get the Lariat with the 5.4L?
Appreciate the help.

A truck with the 4.6 will do a fine job of handling the tasks you described. Certainly a 5.4 will offer better towing capabilities, but if a 6K load is your plan, then don't worry about it.
Don't know what your financial or employment situations are, but as rocky as things are in these areas for many of us. I'd be focusing on what will get the job done and what can I afford if my income drops.
Go test drive a few trucks, just don't make the mistake of driving a 5.4 first.
Good luck
