Cold air intake port modification

Well i got bored today and was reading some info about removeing the CAI port on the air box to improve throttle response, Power and MPG so i removed the port. Problem was i was now taking hot air from the engine bay so i improvised and made the intake less restrictive and larger but now take cold air from where the last port took air. I am waiting for the high temp silicon to dry before i try and use as i dont want to mess up the MAFS. I will let you know if this make any improvement over the stock setup.

I used a 3"-4" pipe reducer and cut out the old port and replaced with this. I used the rubber type instead of the plastic so that i could mould it a little easier to the shape i needed to make it.

(UPDATE)

Well i just got it installed and just took it out for a quick run. I now get a little more induction noise and response does feels a tiny bit quicker than before the mod. There's def a lot more air able to pass through the new port compaired to the old one. There does seem to be more of an impact higher up in the revs than lower down but it's hard to tell. I guess it cant be any worse than the stock setup.

Well im getting some strange MPG readings and at the moment it's hard to tell if they are correct. I done a 16 mile trip to my wifes school and and back, so 32 miles in total. i took it easy without getting a heavy foot and i just pulled up back to the house with a 25.2AVG MPG!!! This is a really hilly trip with a couple of traffic light stops and a couple of junctions as well and i wouldnt have even expected to get 19-20mpg normally let alone 25.2! Air temp was about 78f and fuel tank was 75% full and truck was unloaded. I cant see this increase in the air flow has made this much difference.

I will know better when i do my 700 mile trip next week.

If you're driving in rain, would water get sucked into the opening?

I wouldnt have thought so as it's in the exact same place the original port was taking in air from.

I'm misunderstanding the pic where the air inlet pokes thru the flexible plastic shroud. The inlet points forward, correct? I'll take a peek at my truck to better understand it tomorrow. Is the mod still giving you improved fuel economy?

Interesting idea - I don't think it can be worse than when you started which is good. There's no way it made that much (if ANY) difference in fuel economy though.

wow, your mod is better than the vortec cyclone. Hope they dont find out about it!

In all seriousness, how can you tell a better throttle response with a 4" piece of rubber pipe sticking through the fender? Honestly, if it gave you TWO horsepower I would be completely shocked. And to be able to 'feel' the hp by seat of the pants.... uh, okay.

It is a little hard to explain by the pics. But fuel economy is still better than my normal avg. I will know better end of next week on my long trip. I wouldnt have thought the MPG would have change at all but the computer says they have. I aint dropped below 20mpg since doing it and im still taking it easy and i been doing quite a bit of local stop an start driveing. Im baffled

Like you say it cant be any worse. It would be nice if my gauge is reading correct but im sure it cant be.

It's funny you say that. Our family have had so many GM's over the years and they always used to fit them cyclone things and there's loads lying around in the garage where they removed them because they never worked and always gave check engine light problems and i did thing about putting one of them in line also lol. I didn't though. But the thing with throttle response may be placebo or may not. It is hard to tell but when going out of my drive it does feel a little more snappy as i pull away.

You say you've been taking it easy. Do you normally take it easy when driving before you made the mod? If you usually drove it a little hard before the mod and now have been taking it easy, your mileage will improve just because of your driving style changing to a less aggressive style. I would like to see what your mileage it when you compare it to your normal driving style if your style was different before the mod.
Just curious.

When I removed the snorkel off my truck I too saw an improvement in gas mileage from 16.8 to 22.5 and I did not change my driving style. Only time will tell if this improvement in mileage is for real, but for now it seems to be working.

i change my driveing style up and down depending on my mood. The day after i done the mod i was chilled and drove easy and didnt do any uick take offs and i normally do see above 20mpg when i drive like that but i was seeing quite a bit over that when i tested it that day. The last few weeks i have been doing loads of short little runs and MPG is not loving as my engine aint even upto temp by the time im at destination but im still running at about 16.9mpg.

I too have noticed an increace in milage. I have not added the rubber snorkel yet tho. I have been running whith out the stock snorkel for a couple months now. Half to 1 and a half mpg depending on how i drive.
