need some advice...

hey everyone, just wanted to get some advice on my 09 f150 fx4. i now have 1200 miles on my truck. do i need to worry about changing the oil right away or is it okay to wait for first oil change at about 4k miles? also, do i have to worry about changing rear diff fluid. i just dont want to miss anything i need to do or not do to my new truck. i want it to last and i want to do what is best for my truck. thanks in advance, nsanef150

I really wouldn't worry too much about the diff fluids yet. First, the fluids are very expensive (synthetic) and second there is more tolerance and slush room in the diff cases that there is in the engine. But to me, its always a good thing to get out the filings from any fresh engine. I did my first oil change at 2000km or about 1260 miles.

If you drive your truck mostly empty/unloaded/non towing, just wait for 5k miles and change the engine oil and filter. You have about 60k-100k miles for the rear diff oil.

I'm assuming that nobody looks in the manual which calls for the first change at 7500 miles?

Some people like to change the oil quickly to get rid of the metal shavings during the break-in. Given the tolerances on the engines are so tight, I doubt metal shavings can do harm to the internals or journals.

The service interval is now 7500 miles for '09 per Ford. I still have my doubts if the oil filter can last for so long but I'm leaning to adopting the 7500 mile oil change interval. On my other trucks, the oem oil sat in the crankcase until the 5000 mile mark. No problems with those trucks (upto the point I traded them in).
