side bed access steps

The only missing option on my new Platinum I would have liked were the side bed access steps, but the price was too good to pass up!
Any ideas/thoughts on when or if Ford may offer these as accessories after the fact?

Anyone have them that doesn't want them?

Thanks!

you can buy them they are fairly pricey though, and only work with 6.5FT box, i don't have them because i have a 5.5FT box but i have tried them and they work very well. very useful one of them best things Ford has come up with.

I believe they are offered as an accessory. Check with your Ford dealer's service department or the genuine parts website.

Wonderful idea but have people gotten that lazy to where you cant climb in the bed or step on the tire to reach in?

They list at $750 each. Ouch. I want to add this as well but I'm looking for a better deal.

Where did you get a price of $750. List is $350, Tasca has them for $247.

There are aftermarket access steps available. Check eBay, JC Whitney, etc. I'd like a pair myself. I'm cursed with being only 5'11'' owning a four-wheel-drive truck with the deepest (and tallest) bed on the market. I frequently find it difficult to get to certain things in my toolbox.

List from Ford is $350 for the drivers side (only side available as an accessory at this time). It sounds like they were not pricing the accessory, but pricing the parts.

I ordered a truck with 5.5 bed as well. I never looked to see how the steps are mounted. But drilling/tapping holes would not be that big of a deal.

Anybody good with photoshop here? I was wondering how the steps would look mounted on a 5.5 bed. I bet they could be mounted with part of the step being under the door of the scab or screw but not sure how that would look.......and what type of side rails could be used since they would interfere with them.

i would say you def wouldnt be able to easy fit the side steps on the 5.5 bed. They have a pretty heavy duty support system that is bolted in numerous places. It's def worth a try but i would look at some picks and compare the 5.5 frame to the 6.5 frame mounting points.

step question

Are the stock Ford bed steps electric or is it on some sort of pivot like the amp research?

Also, does any one have installation instructions for the step? I imagine it's a matter of bolting it in, but if it's electric, I'd hope that the harness is there.

Thanks

I got a close look at them and they have a gas piston like on a window lift. It is not electric. You push the small tab on the step face with the tip of your foot and it retracts out. To close you just push it back in with your foot. The unit bolts to the frame.

Currently only the drivers side is available.

I may have to try that sometime when the price and availability is better. As a toolmaker I work with metal and this would be an expensive "oh crap that aint gonna work" project.......Maybe aftermarket would be a better route for the 5.5 beds.

Or take a truck on a test drive and "borrow them" -LOL I am just kidding about that.

I think there may be an issue with the positioning of the fuel tank in relation where the side step is on the 5.5' bed. The mount is probably a bolt through on the frame, and since it is a boxed frame, it might put the bolt ends to close to the tank.
