First Tow

Tonight I got the hitch all set up on my truck and towed the camper a few miles to try everything out. We've got a hybrid (hard box with fold out beds) which weighs around 4000 lbs loaded. I previously had a Colorado which could tow it, but to the F150, its almost like the trailer's not even there. The IBC is going to take some getting used to vs. the inexpensive one I had in the Colorado. I totally locked up the trailer brakes right in front of neighbor's house. Its also a lot easier to back the trailer up with the new truck. I'm assuming wheelbase is the key there.

When that was done, I also hooked up my 5x8 utility trailer. That's a little more problematic as I pretty much can't see it behind the new truck. At times, all I could see was the very edges of the fenders in the rearview mirrors. Looking out the back it would sometimes completely disappear. Very difficult to back up that way. Luckily I don't back it very often as its so light I can move it around by hand. I do use it because the low deck height makes it easier to load. And its much better for hauling bulk mulch in the spring.

I have the same size utility trailer. I bought two 6' fiberglass bicycle flags for it. The are florescent green fiberglass poles with an orange flag on the end. I removed the flags and mounted a pole on each outside rear corner of the trailer so I have some reference when backing.

That's a good idea. I've seen some with PVC poles too, but they are pretty brittle in the winter.

I towed my camper (12 ft. pop-up) this past week 139 miles each way. It weighs right around the 3000lb mark and compared to my old 2003 GMC, I had to almost laugh at the difference. I didn't even know it was there most of the time. The ride was perfect.

I'm very happy with my decision.
