personally i would get the 5.4.more power and torque.and believe me,to haul these heavy trucks around you need all the power and torque you can get.course if thats no concern the 4.6 3v is a great motor, probably the same basic motor thats in my mustang.ive had ford v8 trucks for 40 years and never even seen 20 mpg on the highway.my 09 5.4 lariat gets around 18 on the highway with 3.55 gears. so if you can get 22 mpg with the 4.6 go for it.

I have the 5.4 V8…..the average mileage computer states 12.9 per gallon…..but it’s still getting settled. When I first started it was like at 6……so far I have 479 miles and as it goes the miles go up….figure it will get good after everything works itself out.

I went on a trip of about 150 miles and it used about a quarter tank of gas…..may not get the great gas mileage but I will put a little more gas in the tank for the totally awesome room…..I could hold a party in my back seat…..the truck is a truck, you want great gas mileage buy a car, want room get a truck…..

Saw a test where they put a gallon of gas in a Ford F-150, Dodge Ram, Toyota and Silverado……the Ford came out on top both times the test was done…..

You make the call…..

your buddy must have been running downhill with a tailwind. Ford does make a 'fuel efficient' line (SFE??) but I think it comes with a 3.31 ring.

i have seen 20mpg with my 5.4l 3:73 but usually 19-18 at 120km on the highway. it would not surprise me at all that the 4.6l would be getting 22mpg.

Be careful of any person's claims. You might be surprised how many people do not understand math.

Here are a few references. I still think there is little reason not to choose the 5.4L/3.73LS combo, or 5.4L/3.55 if you don't want the towing mirrors. SFE has the 3.15 axle ratio, not 3.31 that some people mentioned in these links.
My strong opinion with supporting facts.
Barrita loves his 3.55.
3.31?
4.6L 3v?

yep...mine had 322 miles on it and was showing 12 mpg on the dash the night I took it home...now at 1033 miles it is showing 14.8 mpg on the dash. Now if only I can remember this is not the Mach 1 I lost I might make it over 15-16 around town...LOL. Next weekend I am doing a 6 hr round trip and I will track my mpg the right way and report it back on here.

I get 14.5 in heavy stop and go around town. I have seen 20 on long highway trips. I have 3,500 on the ticker.

I can see a 4.6 XLT 4X2 on a flat terrain with a tail wind getting 22. Some have gotten close to that. My Supercrew XLT with a 5.4, 3.55 gears would get 19.2 before ethanol and before I started adding weight, nerf bars, bigger wheels and tires. You get the Lariet and 4 wheel drive, it all eats into the mileage.
