A little worried

My driveway is at a slight angle so when I park I sometimes put the parking brake on. This morning, when I released the parking brake, the pedal released back to the normal position but the parking brake light would not turn off. I had to press and release several times (at least 5) before the light finally turned off. Before it did turned off, I backed out a few feet and the brake did not feel like it was still engaged, so I considered driving that way but but an alarm would go off, I guess telling me the brake was still on. Has anyone experienced anything like this?

I've had the light stay on with my 97 but I think it's just a switch that got stuck or didn't "release" because it would also reset after engaging and disengaging the e-brake several times. My guess is that the brake did release but that a switch just stayed in the "on" position . . .
