No go...

I removed the plastic to examine the tailgate lock so I could rig an electric lock actuator for it. There is no metal panel cover over the top of the tailgate with the step option.

On another note, the backside of the Ford badge isn't accessible either. I was hoping it would be so I could rig an aftermarket backup camera in that area easier if I wanted.

It looks like a small panel would fit in the top portion of the tailgate. The key would be to fit in the stripper pole in the panel. Then the metal panel could get the lineX treatment.

I'd be interested in this as well... an earlier post claimed you can order this accessory as a stand alone, but I haven't found a Dealer or a Ford parts site that will sell the stowable bed extender without the entire cargo management system. If you know something different, please provide the part number!

It would need to accommodate the raised area where the pole is mounted and the depression where its recessed. The problem with a metal panel is, it can deform if any decent load it placed on the tailgate. The raise portions will be subject to damage if the bed is used for any significant work or loads. The plastic just bends, gives, and returns to shape.

Go into the parts deparment and ask them for a print out of the components avalible for the bed. when mine was printed almost every part was sold as different component. They cant expect you to by the whole cargo manegment system to get the bed extender. Ford dont when you buy the truck so the dealer shouldnt either. I will try and find my invoice they printed me out.

I just tried to find a number stamped or molded into my extender but I could not find one.

Its a $365 aftermarket part for the Super Duty which has been availabe since last year.

I went to beach ford in virginia beach and parts quoted me a price of 900.00 just for the bed extender. I'm not kidding!! I was like are you freaking kidding. She said ford charges 450 for each side. It comes in 2 parts. I didn't believe her. I had her print off the pic and the quote and walked out in total disgust. I don't need it that bad.

My price was ment to be their cost price so perhaps the $500+ tax was about right.

The Super Duty stowable extender is $365 and its basically the same design, just a different model. Its just a matter of time before the F150 version is widely available I'm guessing for roughly a similar cost.

Ford needs to get their act together on this. I was quoted the same price by my local Dealers plus they wanted $500 to install it!!

I bought mine on ebay and it took longer to open the box than it did to bolt it in place - definitely less than a 1 beer install.

For those that are getting the stowable bed extender without the entire cargo management system, I suspect you are ordering it from the factory like that... apparently the Dealers cannot order the extender from manufacturer by itself unless it comes that way from factory?

For those considering getting one, it does appear to be a neat feature. although it appears to slightly restrict your bed width at the tailgate area when it is stowed. I hated having to hang my aluminum one on the garage wall when it wasn't being used - then when I needed it, it was always at home.

It only comes out as far as the wheel arches which is nice as you can still get the 8x4 sheet in the back without it hitting the bed extender.

Does anyone think that there is any difference between the Super Duty Bed Extender and the one for the F-150? I am finding some on ebay but they list it as super duty....any thoughts? Thx

I don't know about the actual dimensional difference but the mounting holes and the pin holes are slightly different. There is a plastic pin on each side that slides into holes in the bed to keep the extender in position. Not sure if the F150 can accommodate the same location. The extenders look very different though they have the same features.

Here's a video of it in action. Compare it to the Dodge where you have to move it around a lot and lose space in the bed. What a waste of time the Dodge is.
