FX4/Camera Add-On?

Hi guys and gals,

I am looking at a 09 FX4 loaded to the hilt except the rear view camera. It has the nav system, but from what I read, the rear view camera is an option - I thought it came with the navigation.

Anyway, I have a couple of questions:

1. Since the truck will have the nav, would the wiring already be at the tailgate?

2. Would the adddition of the camera be fairly simple?

3. Does anyone have the part numbers as to what I would need?

4. Anyone done this before? Would it be a "plug and play" install? Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

Just find one with the camera and you won't have to worry about it. It is a $450 option whether ordered with the nav or not. If you try to add it later it will cost more. Good luck.

Chances are the wiring will be there...I was going to add the power sliding rear window to my '05 lariat and the wiring harness with plug was hanging right behind the rear seat. Another option might be to get one of the rear camera kits that are out these days. If the harness is not there - no issue as they run right off the trailer tow wiring. Also, they use the top of the license plate as the camera mount which would eleminate the fugly "tailgate nipple" that comes with the factory rear camera systems. Would be a bit of work but I bet you could wire the aftermarket camera right into the nav system - especially if the wiring harness is already there be sure and check both the tailgate interior for the wiring and the rear of the nav hu as there is proabably a plug there for sure...can't imagine Ford using two different nav h/u's for with or without the rear view camera system.

did you have any luck with this camera issue? I am in the same boat, just bought an fx4 loaded but no cam. They told me the aftermaket module not avail yet and can't get the unit direct from ford either.

I just went through this with a 09 Lariat with Nav. I was told they could do it
but it had to be in the rv mirror. I told them to go ahead thinking it would be the Ford mirror system. It turned out to be an aftermarket product with the camera mounted to the top of the lic. plate. The microphone for Sync is mounted between the lights on the overhead consul and seems to work fine.

The camera system does not have the guidance lines of the Ford system. I wanted the camera to make it easier to hook up to my boat but I will not be able to test this till the end of April.( no lines may be an issue?) The picture quality is very clear during the day but a little noisy at night. The camera position is more prone to dirt then the factory mount would be. Cost 700.

WOW - $700.00 I purchased the rear view camera system for my '05 F-150 for $169.00 at CostCo (IIRC). It is a complete kit with a 4" monitor that you can mount anywhere you want inside the cab. The camera mount goes on the top if the license frame as well. If you could find a cool spot to mount the monitor - would be a great way to save $$'s. And it's pretty straightforward to connect as well.

No, I was never able to get a firm "yes or no" on whether the wiring was already there. It's a $450 option, so I opted to get a FX4 with the camera already there. It will save a lot of headaches in the future.

Good luck with your search. Please post back if you find something.

I had one of these set-ups as well. Very simple to install and work okay. On my 06 KR, I used a license plate frame camera made by Boyo. I ran the wire under the frame of the truck (I ran it through plastic wire loom - ****, eh?) up to the passenger rear door, then along the rail to my aftermarket head unit. It was plug and play, so I saw the display in a 8" screen. Plus, I was able to turn the camera on at anytime, not just in reverse.

Yeah! My but's still sore on that one! I really thought I was getting the factory system and I didn't want anyone other than the dealer working on the truck due to possible Sync and warranty issues. I'll be pissed if it doesn't
work well on trailer hook ups, which I do a lot of from May to Oct.

I'd be surprised if the wiring wasn't there. For example, I've been told if you do not get the Trailer Brake Controller (TBC) the wiring for it will still be there, it is just plugged into the back of the coin holder slot that takes the place of the TBC. Maybe that'll be useful for me when replacing that coin holder/TCB hole with the Upfitter Switches.

Sounds like a cool set up and I'm with you on the "**** retentive" stuff...I'm the same way - I alwasy try to make it look stock too the 8" monitor and ability to turn it on any time - great idea...

Well, hopefully it will work great for you and you'll forget the price - eventually anyway I have found over the years of buying new vehicles to err on the side of getting all the options...as it will drive me nuts everytime I drive the vehicle and wish I would have gotten the option What will you be towing - boat or trailer? When you get it hooked up - snap a pic of your F-150 in "action"

I dunno. A tech from blueovalforums.com confirmed the wiring harness was not present if you didn't order the camera. A cost cutting measure from what he/she said. I guess it makes since - why run a harness all the way down if a camera is not present and save the extra cost by using a shorter harness.
