2009 Ford F-150 Unsurpassed in Fuel Economy, Capability
These are the numbers Tbird reported in a previous post:
My 5.4 gets anywhere from 11-15 city and 15-18 highway, depending on weather, driving habits and load. The other week driving into a 40MPH headwind I was hard pressed to do much better then 14MPG on the highway

When you consider all the engineering that Ford did to achieve "Superior Fuel Economy", including putting in a 3.15 rear end, it's really nothing to brag about.

The current model Sierra's and Silverado's get much better MPG numbers then this SFE F150 will. It's really not that impressive.
Not true, I have gotten as much as 22 MPG with my 5.4, just because I don't brag about it in my posts doesn't make it any less true. Believe it, don't believe it, I don't care. The conditions I spoke of in the post you quoted were the best MPG I had achieved to that point. I have since been able to do better. After I installed my Roush catback I consistently average just under 16 MPG city (15.8 actually).

"That sounds about right. My '04 XLT with the 5.4 averages anywhere between 12-15 MPG depending how I drive and what I'm carrying."
I don't care what mileage you get. Just be honest about it. You said you get 19-22. That's a pretty good number. Then you say you have gotten "as much as 22" meaning one time when you coasted downhill without fuel and after a roush catback installed, that's not being completely honest.
When the SFE model comes out we'll see if it gets anywhere near what Ford claims.
LOL...too funny, and sadly, too true!
Hey, I've gotten 99.9 mpg in my F-150 (when I press the mileage reset button, going down a hill, in neutral) why can't the '09 get that good of mileage!!!!
Second, due to the new way the EPA calculates mileage, the '09 should get at least what is advertised.
If you are confused about how the new EPA ratings work, and how they compare to the old pre-'08 ratings, you should do some simple research.
Not sure why you would be so startled that the '09 with a 6 speed automatic would get better mileage than an '08 with a 4 speed auto, especially when the '09 weighs less. It's really not rocket science.
Congrats to Ford for offering better mileage, more capability, more HP and more stump-pulling torque.
22mpg is possible in a 5.4 so i tbird isnt lying. my dad can get 22 going b/w 65-70 on the interstate in his 08 KR. sister gets 21 in her 06 lariat going about that speed.
but i do agree fords still behind on MPG. my buddies chevy 1500 gets 24mpg just cruising with that active management or w/e its called.

Thats why the EPA has a standard test that all vehicles are rated against and that why they changed the test in '08 to be more accurate.
Bottom line is that it shouldn't surprise anyone that a vehicle that is lighter, more aerodynamic, has a 6 speed vs a 4 speed auto, a higher-efficiency engine, and has been rated higher in independent mileage testing, should get better mileage.
As the other poster mentioned, its hillarious that now the 09s are about to come out, all of a sudden the previous year models got amazing gas mileage.
Flame me if you want to.....
You can't go by the onboard computer says. An exhaust may help but whats to say an exhaust wont help the sfe the same? If we are talking truth in advertising we should be talking stock trucks. I refuse to believe that anyone gets over 20mpg in a stock 04 F150 tank after tank. Dividing the miles you drive by the number of gallons used to FILL UP the tank, tankfull after tankfull, will yield the truth guys.
