2009 spy pics and video

I don't like all of the little buttons on the inside.

With huge market pressure being levied by GM's latest full-size trucks, Ford's engineers are hard at work on the 2009 Ford F-150. Prototype testing of the next-generation F-150 is ramping up in Dearborn, Michigan, and our spy photographers have been shooting nonstop to keep tabs on Ford's progress.

From what we can see of the prototypes, the 2009 Ford F-150 will look similar to the Super Duty trucks that went on sale earlier this year. Although a few prototypes had Ford's corporate three-bar grille hiding beneath their covers, our spy shooters say it was just a mock-up hiding the real design underneath.

When they managed to catch a few test mules with the real grille in place, it was clear that the F-150 will use a much different design. Instead of the restrictive three-bar setup, the F-150 will get a front end with large cutouts to feed plenty of air to the new V8s planned for the half-ton pickup.

The current 5.4-liter Triton V8 is getting replaced by Ford's new "Boss" engines that are expected to displace around 6.2 liters at the top end and around 5.4 to 5.6 liters on the low end. Expect horsepower numbers approaching 400 and similar levels of torque, as Ford wants to stay on top of Toyota's 5.7-liter V8. It delivers 381 hp and 401 pound-feet of torque through a six-speed automatic, so expect six gears in the Ford's automatic transmission as well.

Interior photos show a cabin with a maze of small buttons scattered all over the dash. It's hardly the kind of work-glove-friendly setup we're used to seeing in a full-size pickup. Given Ford's tradition of offering several different interior layouts, this could be one of several designs destined for the 2009 F-150.

Expect to see the production version of the 2009 Ford F-150 at next year's Detroit auto show in January, with sales beginning later in the year.

That shifter looks gross... That thing stands out like a sore thumb.
