New Bedrug Bedliner and Extang Solid Fold Tonneau Cover
New Bedrug Bedliner and Extang Solid Fold Tonneau Cover
Just had my new Extang Solid Fold Tonneau Cover and Bedrug Bedliner installed.
Very nice, I really like the bedrug. It's like kneeling on a cushion and it's fit is really nice. The only bothersome area I found is by the rear tailgate section where the zippers are. There is a small open area where the zippers starts on the left side and stops on the right size. Also the zipper comes in contact with the painted surface. I may put down some 3M tape on the painted surface and then use a wide section of industrial Velcro to put over the open area. Has anyone ever had problems with this area or am I'm worrying for nothing?
The Extang hard folding cover fits on top of the bed walls just like my Ford Factory ABS Folding Tonneau cover fit on my 2008 Sport Trac. Same seals and everything. Since the bulk wall on the 2010 is shorter than the side walls due to the plastic bed rail protectors, they had to put a very thick and wide foam seal on top of the bulk head to match the height. Fits VERY good, but I haven't had any rain but I can't see how it would leak. If it does, it should be really easy to correct. Panels are very nice. They are not perfectly lined up with the next. This isn't a big deal but does make them off alignment when comparing on the edge of the tailgate. The panels where they connect, just are not perfectly aligned, that's all. The only problems I've seen were 2 areas on the top wherer the paint was missing in a dot pattern. The top is a textured aluminum sheet. It's the same pattern and style as what my last 2 new Pop Up campers used for their side walls, except their's were painted white. This is actually no big deal as I've seen this on other things. I could always take a paint pen and fix these very minor flaws. This cover seems really solid. It looks to be about the 50 lbs Extang says it is. While being pretty solid, it's doesn't seem as heavy as my previous 2008 Sport Trac Ford Factory ABS Folding Cover which was 70 lbs for that 4' bed.
I did notice the trailgate rubber lip seal is doubled so this looks to help water intrusion and the straps were redesigned. The screws are in very solid, more into the edge of the panels. There is no more round snap ons. They use a plastic push clip now where the receiver is on the front panel by the cab rear window. The clip itself has an adjustable strap and it seems to be pretty solid.
Now I'm going to order the Cargo Cleats from Extang and my bed accessories will be finished. I may get some of those push down round lights and fix velcro on them and put them down in the bed, within arms reach. Never needed them but it is an option.
Now I can finally use my bed without the fear of scratching or denting the metal and causing rust. I can also put my tools and gear in the bed without them holding snow or water now. Finally get to clear out the back seat.
Googled to find some weights. The 5.5' bedrug seems to have a 17# weight while the 6.5' bedrug has a 21# weight. I have the 5.5' bed. The Extang Solid Fold has a 50# weight. So together the weight is 67 lbs. My truck factory optioned has a 1430 lbs payload according to the Tread Act Sticker so with these additional accessories, I now have a total of 1363 lbs of payload. Still pretty good. I had all the same options on my 2008 Sport Trac with 4.6L 3 valve engine and it had 1218 lbs of payload with all options. So I'm still roughly 150 lbs more.
I'm putting this in the 2009 - 2011 section as this may be of more interest to people buying new trucks and my experiences are with the models that fit these year trucks.

Here's some pics. Oh, this thing is dry. We had a hail storm and pouring rain for a day in a half. The only sign of water was very very minor seepage at the front driver's corner bulkhead. The F150s need an additional foam seal on the bulk head in between the bed walls because the bed walls with protectors, are higher than bulk head. Without foam seal, there would be a large gap.
I readjusted the cover so it looks like no seepage can occur now. Besides it was so minor it ran right behind the Bedrug Bedliner and straight to the beds drain holes. The bed wasn't wet at all. The Stream was as wide as a pencil tip, but should be gone now.
All I can say is Excellent Tonneau Cover and Excellent Bedliner. Bedrug was $450 installed and Extang Solid Fold was $799 installed, which was about 60 seconds.

This bedliner and top rock! So much better than the Factory Hard Plastic Bedliner I had in my 2004 Titan and much MUCH nicer, water tight and better built than the Pace Edwards Jackrabbit Hard Rolling Tonnneau Cover I had in that Titan as well. Also Extang was MUCH cheaper than that Pace Edwards.
The 2008 Sport Trac didn't need a bedliner as it's bed was made of ribbed ABS plastic and it had the excellent Ford Hard Folding Tonneau Cover that also didn't leak. I did put a rubber bed mat in the Sport Trac as I was gouging the plastic pretty bad here and there.

I love my Solid Fold. Super tough. Never a single leak. I've considered the bed rug but it seems that it would make the bed tougher to clean out when grass or dirt gets in it.

I also have the cleats. They are freaking awesome!!

They tuck nicely under the cover.

Also I notice you have your liner pulled farther back on your bed. To get the cover to line up on the front bulk header, I have it closer to the cab. I actually pulled it back about 3/8" from the cab, from the picture above, so it's not overhanging the front bulk head but is lined up straight up and down now, with the bulk head. I have to think yours is pulled back further which looks like it could allow water to come in at the bulk head. Just curious. I also looked at Extangs website video and judged their alignment by the grooves in the tailgate plastic protector. There's looks very close to mine after I readjusted the cover to be lined up with the bulkhead.
I guess the alignment really doesn't matter as long as it's water tight.
I also didn't have notch my bed wall rail protectors like I thought I'd have to. The installer said they never have to cut the plastic as the clamp can get around it and clamp squarely on the metal lip. They were right as plastic bends out and slides to the side, where the clamp can then line up squarely with the metal lip.
Thanks for your earlier thread. That helped me decide on the purchase. THANKS!!
Also, what bed extender are you using?? Is it a no drill installation like the OEM or Amp Research(with optional bracket)?? Since your's is proven to fit with the Extang and it uses more of the tailgate's area than the Ford OEM Extender, I may get that one. Thanks.

I noticed you have a different bulk head seal, was that from the factory?? Mine is more squarish as seen in my pic.

I'm not sure about the bulk head seal. It's whatever they sent to me.
And you're welcome for the help! It's why we're all here.
wish i could find a bed extender for 50 bucks! Looks great by the way. The solid fold is next on my list

You don't have a brand name for your extender do you. Could you describe how it actually bolts in?? I know there are 3 holes on each side. The top and bottom hole should be unthreaded and I think the center hole is threaded. My bedliner now covers this up so I can't see.
Thanks again!

There are three holes. I drilled them out of my bed liner too. Technically, they are all unthreaded to start with. The bolts you put on the center holes will automatically thread the hole for you when you put them on. It's easy to do. Perfect fit.
Got my Solid Fold yesterday and installed it. Looks good found a small ding on the very front, must have been from shipping. I'm going to give them a call today and see what they offer. Other than that it looks and fits great.
My bed extender is an Amp Research. I called them after buying it and they sent me a new pair of mounts free of charge. I needed the mounts that allow an angled install/removal so that I can use it after I load my motorcycle (rear of bike would otherwise be in the way for vertical installation).
I didn't like the idea of using the self tapping screws that were included with the mounts, so I went to Lowes and bought six stainless screws, some washers and self locking nuts. I removed the tail lights and that allowed access to install the washers and nuts on the back side. I did have to grind the diameter of the screw heads down a bit in order to get them to fit within the recesses of the Amp Research mounts. I think this allows for a more secure mount. I also put some paint around the holes after drilling to help keep rust at bay in the future.
