VVT Solenoid Replacement HELP! Parts aren't right!

I'm helping a buddy with his rig. 2004 F150 XLT with the 5.4 Triton (Build Date 11/04). All signs (codes, noise, behavior) point to a VVT solenoid. OK. Did the research, bought the parts, learned about the procedure.

Problem... The parts specified by Rockauto, Advance, O'Reilly's (Gates VVS102), specifically the seal, are NOT the same as the one that came out of it. The seal in the truck is round while the replacement seal is round, larger, and the hole for the solenoid is offset.

Further, there is absolutely no way to get a T-27 driver in the hole beside the solenoid.

Can someone help me with what parts are correct and the procedure for replacing the VVT Solenoid? I have limited experience with the Triton.

Thanks in advance. Need to get this buttoned up tomorrow. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You have an engine built after 12/04/06. Solenoid is the same (Gates VVS102) but the gasket is different. You need Dorman 917200CS.

Thanks GLC...

I've sourced the new seal locally so I'll be ready tomorrow AM. What has your experience been in re-using the valve cover seal? A valve cover set is $70 and we're on a budget. Back in the day, you ALWAYS replaced valve cover gaskets but now we're dealing with the superior (and more expensive) O-ring types.

Thanks, again, for your help.

If they are clean, not damaged, and not brittle you should be able to reuse them.
