Some time ago, I was in the river bottom. Being young and dumb, I didn’t know how to drive in sand, and got stuck. Not knowing much about 4X4, I put it in 4 high. Tried and tried to get out. A friend hopped in, dropped in in 4 low and he FLOORED it!! We hear a LOUD popping/bang sound. Front wheels quit spinning. Eventually got pulled out. But now 4X4 won’t work. And when you put in 4 hi or lo, you move 5 feet and heat and feel the popping sound again. Hoping to not have to take it in to a differential shop. Please help

 

It could be a few things. Doubt the differential only because stuff is turning irregardless if 4x4 is on or off. I'm leaning towards the transfer case.
