vin numbers

which character digit on the motor and transmission of a 2004 2wd 4.6 is it 2or 3 numbers matching the firewall or windshield .17 character proves it is the orginal motor thats so i dont get stuck with a hot motor

I don't believe ford numbers match engines to a vehicle. The engine code that is part of the vin only tells you what engine the vehicle was built with, i.e. a 4.6, a 5.4, etc.
