05 FX4 Stuck in low range
05 FX4 Stuck in low range
I turned on 4 hi last night around 15 MPH as I approached an icy turn. Felt a big clunk, which I now realize was the t case going to low. Went on down the street for a Christmas visit not realizing that the transfer case was stuck.
I believe that my truck requires the gear shift in neutral and the brake on to get the transfer case from low to high.
I tried everything to get it back to high.
Shifted 4wd switch with the transmission in neutral with brake on, also in park.
Backed up hard and braked hard.
Restarted multiple times in both N and P with 4WD switch in different positions.
The only thing I haven't checked is the brake lights. I will be sure they all work in case that has any effect on the circuit that allows shifting out of low.
I just read about a guy with an 07 who had similar issues. It turns out his transfer case shift motor seized up and took out the firewall mounted solenoid at the same time.
Wow, this sounds so much like my issue.
It's going to stink to find out too. This week we are expecting our coldest weather in many months.
I might just get the shift motor and relay as a "parts changer" as opposed to diagnostician approach.
I'll start by pulling the shift motor and seeing if I can get it out of low.
Any thoughts or experiences will help.

Before you pull the ESOF motor, try giving it a few love taps with a hammer or stiff mallet. Although they do go bad - usually when you need them most - they con sometimes be brought back to life with a hammer. And given the low temps, that will be a ton easier than pulling it out.
So, I manually switched the t case down to 2wd and put on a fresh shift motor.
The 4wd system does not respond to commands.
I'm going to check the electrics next.
Does anyone have a process they'd follow?
I have the relay and fuse identities. Going to check those next.
