Spare tire cable setup?

Hi, I'm Derek. I did search, didn't find exactly what is going on with mine, so I'll ask.

I recently acquired an '04 4x4 with the 4.6. The spare cable and pulley setup is completely gone, from what I can tell. I found one online but I just don't know if it'll work or where to install it, et cetera.

Maybe you knowledgeable guys can verify that the one below is what I need?

PS I love my truck. Love it.

Looks about right to me. The cable on my 2002 broke and I lost the spare tire. I had no idea of when it fell off and I hope nobody was behind me and ran over it. That is when I found out that the cable breaking was a design flaw. Ford added the spring on the end of the cable to relieve stress on the cable to prevent it from breaking. The NHTSA tried to get Ford to recall the trucks that did not have the spring on the cable but Ford wouldn't do it. They just claimed that if you didn't crank the tire up too tight it wouldn't break.

I did read that their cables were known to break, but I didn't know all that! Thanks!

Even though the cable is gone, though, you'd think I'd see the other part, but I don't. I could be looking in the wrong area, I guess. I just don't want to spend $100 on something that's wrong, especially from the internet.

I'll have another look-see today.

I agree with Roadie, looks like the right set up, should just bolt up to a cross member under the bed.

Much obliged! I hate keeping the spare in the bed. Besides, here in CA, it'll grow legs.
