2004 5.4 3V engine interchange

My 128,000 mile FX4 needs an engine due to low oil pressure damage to the right head. The junkyard says '04 is a stand alone year. I've read that engines produced after 3/'05 should have less issues. I'd assume this is related to crank. shaft thrust surface machining. I have access to totaled cars. I'd like to buy a '05 5.4 Expedition for the engine. Will this engine work? If not what's the issue and can it be resolved?

Honestly I'm in sticker shock of what new and used trucks cost. I'd love to punt this one even though it still nice, but I can't justify spending 20K on a 6 year old truck. Any ballpark guess what a clean blue/black '04 Supercab FX4 is worth that needs an engine?

It's hard to sell a vehicle with a bad engine without "giving it away". Used engine replacement or reman would be the likely choices. A reman is expensive but not like a newer truck. Tough position to be in. Good Luck!

The used truck market is out of control.
I was looking at 2008-2010 trucks, and the cheapest 4wd extended cabs were starting at $16000+. Most had some signs of rust.

I'd love to dump this truck, but it's really nice and almost exactly what I wanted. From what I've read, it seems that the engines between 2004-2008 do interchange longblocks, but 2004 stands alone for intake and oil pan. I have new oil pump, chains, guides, tensioners, and phasers. I'm going to take my chances with a used 2005 and up Expedition engine and replace the timing components. I can buy a whole Expedition for less than $1500 and recoup some money parting the rest of the Expedition out.
