Overheating issue

So yesterday driving home AC all of the sudden quit blowing cold. I noticed the temp gauge start to climb it got to about 3/4 to the hot side and set there. It usually runs a little less then half (almost in the middle). Drove for another 10 min and the needle pegged out hot. I pulled over released the radiator pressure and waited a little while and the temp settled back to normal. Come to find out I was very low on coolant. My question is about the AC, which I just had to have repaired with a new compressor. Did it start blowing hot because the computer would shut the compressor off in an overheating situation as a non essential? Or do I have to worry about my new compressor?
