Towing
Towing
So need advice on towing. I have the FX4 and it says I can tow 9100lbs. So question is should I get a programmer? What would bennafit me more for towing a heavy load? My travel trailer weighs 7620 and figure I'll be putting in 500 lbs or so. I'm getting the weight distribution hitch. Thanks
You can get a programmer if you like, but I'm not sure that it's going to make a world of difference. I would concentrate more on making sure the trailer is properly balanced and that you have a good brake controller/W-D Hitch. Depending on how often your are towing 8Klbs, then you might even look at re-gearing. Programmer would be my last step.
My 06 fx4 tows a 7900 lb trailer just fine. It lacks in acceleration. I'm not passing anyone though lol. I have 3.73 gears. Only thing i think would help acceleration is a supercharger. Overall it tows pretty dang good for a F150 and I keep up with my brother in law in his new cummins 2500. We drive 65 when towing. I reccomend you spend the money of a programmer instead on a good impact an floor jack if you don't have one.
Or a 4.10/4.56 gearset depending on what tires he is running. You'd be amazed at how much gearing will help. It's cheaper than a supercharger anyway, though 4x4's can get a bit pricey having to do both differentials. The programmer isn't a bad thing to have, it's just not going to make a world of difference for towing, especially if it's just occasional use.
