Getting ready to dive into the timing set. What gotchas do I need to look out for?
Well the cam phasers are knocking now, power is in the toilet, and the P0012 is back with a vengance...
Time to tear down and rebuild that stupid VCT set...
Yeah not one of my favorite design features of the 5..4L 3V Triton engines...
So I am pricing up parts, and want to make sure I have my all my i's dottend and t's crossed as it were...
To do the job I am looking at the following shopping list...
CLOYES Part # 90391SB Includes: Crank Sprocket, Chain (2), Tensioner (2), Tensioner Arm (2), Guide (2)
FEL-PRO Part # TCS46078 Timing Cover Gasket Set.
DORMAN Part # 917250 Camshaft Phaser / Variable Timing Sprocket
FEL-PRO Part # VS50664R PermaDryŽ Valve Cover Gasket Set W/VCT Grommets.
GATES Part # 43504 Water Pump Includes Gasket.
I would also need a new serpentine belt, upper and lower radiator hoses, coolant, oil, and filter.
I have heard some folks say this would be a good time to go in and do the oil pump as well... Is it worth it at 110K miles?
The Saturn is almost ready to hit the road again, and the family borrowed car deal won't last for long! So it's up to me to finish getting it ready by tossing the new belt on it, verifying the power steering lines are tight, filling it, with coolant and power steering fluid, banging the bad wheel stud out and pressing a new one in then getting it inspected and on the road again...
This should buy me the time to do the work on the engine of the truck, AND swap those HD Moog coils over to get the nose back into the air...
So what says the forum. Is my shopping list about right or am I due to find some surprises in there that I should prepare for?

No need to pull the water pump, unless you are inclined to just replace it. As far as rad hoses, I only removed my upper. It was in good shape, so I reused it.
Pick up some rtv sealant. You will need to put a dab at any seam that the gasket crosses. So where the cylinder head meets the block in 4 spots, also where the valve covers meet the front cover. I put a thin line around the front of the pan to help reseal the front cover as well.
As far as the oil pump, I never replaced mine. I probably should have when I was in there, but I also had good oil pressure when I replaced my phasers.
If you are replacing the pump, I've heard that the gt500 oil pump puts out more volume than the stock oil pump. I have not verified, but it's worth looking into.

I'm sure if I search enough, I can find plenty of examples of other brands of phasers being used where the knock returns due to the low oil pressure issues not being addressed in the first place.
Those don't look like the old 2v 5.4 tensioners in that kit...I'd toss those in instead, FWIW.

My shopping list is FAR more extensive, I am figuring if I am going in there I might as well get oil pump, water pump, belts, hoses, tensioners replaced at the same time. I mean this is a much better time to swap these out compared to somewhere out on a highway between Houston and Oklahoma City...
My grand total for parts, not including fluids such as oil, oil filter (in my inventory), coolant (Need to get some locally), and hose clamps, comes up to $650.62 + $22.09 S&H for a grand total of $672.71
Since the truck is going to be down for a while to do this, I am taking the opportunity to do some other LONG overdue work.
#1. Complete the trailer harness / accessory reverse LED light install.
#2. Install the Moog HD coil springs.
#3. Replace sway bar, and lower control arm bushings.
#4. Finish off the exhaust. Stop the leaks at the cats. Graft in a 2.5x2.5x3 Y pipe, to a 3" Summit kit, with a Magnaflow SISO muffler, exiting in the stock location.
