transmission shift cable

Hey guys i just had a quick question ive been searching the interwebs i cannot find my damn answer. Well anyway im pulling out my interior to replace my carpet truck is a 04 fx4 with the floor shifter and i cannot get the cable off of the shift assembly does that little plastic end just have a cup and the little metal rod have a ball and it just pops off? Everything is plastic and im affraid of breaking something.thank you for any help.

Yes the cable end just pops on, and there's a clip that holds the cable housing onto the front of the shifter

Metal retaining spring inside is similar to how a hood strut mounts. Ball and socket.
