Fuel Pump Replacement and Problems
Fuel Pump Replacement and Problems
First off I have an 06 F150 4.6V8 4 door. 26 gal tank
My truck began acting up, stalling at lights and losing power uphill. There was also an issue that would pop up after long drives of a gas smell outside the truck. I brought it to a mechanic who told me the canister vent solenoid was stuck open which was the gas I was smelling and that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. He said the fuel pump was only getting about 7psi and the truck was running lean. After getting the quote I decided to tackle it myself and replace the fuel pump.
I decided after studying into the fuel pump replacement that removing the bed would be the best option. The bed came off easy, but when I get down to the tank the fuel pump is halfway under the cab.. WTF (every other replacement I read about said removing the bed was an option). Then I start looking into the problem more and I notice that there are two lines that run from the fuel pump and T to a electrical connection then back to what I believe is the canister vent. This line was snapped in half at the connection of the fuel pump. I believe that is what was causing the truck to run lean giving the impression that the canister vent was stuck open.
My two main questions are;
1. What is that line that I was looking at that was snapped? I am going to ford tomorrow but would like to be able to price it online before as well. 2. 2. Also, to replace the fuel pump it seems as if I will need to drop the tank. It seems everyone does it with ease just removing the bed. Is it just this year that has this issue?
I have looked up and down to try to find this but nothing is turning out like my truck looks. I am going to try to upload pictures, but I am new to this forum and don't really know the ropes. Thanks for your help.

The hose I am talking about is the top hose in the first picture. The second picture you can barely see, but it is snapped in half towards the connection on the pump.

take a look at a new fuel pump hopefully your problem is there. cant really see what your talking about in your pics.
Can't really see the snapped hose in the second picture, but if it were me, I would probably replace that damaged line first if it can be reached from above without dropping the tank. Once it's in, I'd drive the truck a little bit and determine if that damaged component might have been your problem to begin with.
Not sure how many miles are on your rig, but I suppose you could make the argument that you might as well replace the pump since you've already gone this far (?). I guess that's a call only you can make based on how much longer you are planning to keep the truck and how much time and money you want to stick into this repair.
On a side note, it's kind of amazing to see how much debris worked its way up onto the topside of the fuel tank.....
