fail to start anomaly

Greetings, I have a 2003 V6 F150 with a little over 100K on it. please excuse my lack of mechanical knowledge and vocabulary.
The other day I drove it for about 30 miles, got to my destination and turned it off.
When I got back in and tried to start it it wouldn't turn over. all I could hear coming from under the hood is a soft rumbling ( kinda sounded like a bad pully) as it tried to start but no cranking.
every time I turned the key I could hear what I think was the belt moving but thats about it.
I let it sit for an hour and it fired right up like always, and it has started just fine every time I have tried since.

I know its in need of tune up and I will probably start there to cover my bases but I was wondering if a failing idler pully could possibly be the culprit ( full display of how little I know right there) I know my idler pully was on its way out but i just figured I would deal with it when I had to.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

you might get better a response in the 97-03 forum or the engine forum. maybe one of the moderators will be kind enough to move it for you.

I agree that the mods should move this one. That being said I'll take a crack at it......

No a bad idler pulley will not cause a no start.

You said there was a rumbling noise when you tried to start it, was it a high pitched noise? If so I would suspect that the starter was not engaging with the flywheel. If there is a bad spot on the flywheel then it is the luck of the draw as to when it lines up to cause your issue. It may work fine the next 1000 times then could give you trouble the next 3 or 4 times in a row.

Do you live in the rust belt of the country?
