07 5.4 starter question.

I was driving my truck today, stopped for gas again, and when I went to start it up all I got was the solenoid spinning and not engaging starter. I tried knocking on it with a light hammer but nothing doing.

In the past on other vehicles I've had starters that start to act up a bit so I would know a replacement would be needed. This one was out of the blue with no prior warning. Has anyone experienced a failure like this and is this normal or could it be something else?

Thank you

The solenoid doesn't spin, but the Bendix drive does - exactly what are you hearing?

Okay, it's either a bad starter or a flex plate missing teeth. Same as old school.
