What year model 5.4 3v is the most reliable? Will replace mine soon....

Hello. I have a 2004 f150 with the 5.4 3v.
I have 200k on it.

It runs fine but I want to have an engine sitting ready to stick in when it goes.
I am thinking about finding a engine from a wrecked truck or salvage yard.
What year model should I look for that had the least problems to put in? The most updates. No cam phaser issues etc....
The 2008?
What should I spend?

If I buy a reman.....will I get the most updated stuff? Where? How much?

Thanks guys.

2010 5.4 3v is the latest .. Found not only in the F150 ..

Improved heads and 3rd revision phasers .. Should bolt right in ..

Although it could be the same as an early, Worn out, Million mile 04 if its not maintained ..

You got 200,000 miles, great for you. I was not so lucky, two weeks ago I posted here that I had to replace the engine at 98,000 miles. Oil starvation caused burned valve and warped head on the right side. Since I have babied it and the body is still great I decided to go with a Ford re-man engine with a 3 year warranty and I know what I have throughout the rest of this truck. FYI the engine cost $7,700 of which $2,000 was labor. The dealer's mechanic said the 20 hours labor was per the book so you can check tour local labor rates. 100,000 to 120,000 mile used engines would have cost $2,800 to $3,200 plus the $2,000 labor and a one year parts only warranty. That is about $5,000 for a used engine of uncertain condition which is a lot to spend on a used engine but maybe it may make sense for you since you have 200,000 miles on the rest of your truck. Sounds like you have time to shop around to find better prices so let us know what you find.

^Those are really high prices for both. You don't need to go to Ford for the engine, and used ones don't cost that much from everything I've seen. Especially not any that have that many miles on them.

I just bought a full reman long block from Kosiski Auto In Omaha, NE. I paid $2800 plus $450 core charge (I got that back). 100k or 36 month warranty. It is the SAME company who makes them for FORD Motor CO. I would absolutely go that route again. They delivered mine and picked up the core. They ship too. I stripped off the blower and intake and a local guy pulled my old one and installed the new one for $450. I had to reinstall the blower etc... I had about $150 in 2 way towing charges too. Worked out good. I felt like I got a good deal.

I suggest waiting until you actually need a new engine. Yours could last another 100k miles or you could total the truck tomorrow.

Find a 5.0 or 6.2 to drop in when it dies. An Ecoboost would be cool in a 04-08 model truck also. There are a lot of them around now. I saw a wrecked Eco 2 days ago.

Sorry if this is high jacking, but has any one installed a 6.2 in there 04-08?

Not a "bolt in" swap by any means. Too many changes to both the truck and particularly the electronics - which would make this swap a nightmare.

Doesn't Ford make a kit to fit a 5.0 in place of a 5.4? I just can't remember if it was for the tenth gens or the 11th gens

I'd love it if they made a kit, cause I would probably seriously consider it whenever mine blows up. Our 4-speeds don't seem to like the 5.0s too much (or the other way around), but that can be swapped out once the trans goes too.

Ah. 6 speed dreaming. I nearly pulled the trigger on a cheap 6 cog.

From a good source it won't work. Or it will work with $$$$. Everything is different electrically wise.

The only way would be to do an entire 09+ gut transplant. I mean engine, trans, harnesses, gauge cluster, Anti theft, ABS, RCM etc

Sadly the new six speed has its own ecm to control it, where the 4 speed was controlled off the same ecm as the engine. So getting the new 6 speed would be opening another bag of worms in wiring. Which wouldn't be fun.

F it! Drop my cab on the 11+ frame and power train

For a full "kit," I'd want a lot of those electrical snags taken care of. But that's never gonna happen. I hate all these computers. I miss the good ole days (that I wasn't even close to being around for) when the only thing you worried about was fitting the motor in the car and having it match the bell housing on the trans.

That would probably be the easiest thing to do.
